Small early-morning earthquake off Malibu

December 31, 2008 |  8:11 am

A small earthquake occurred off the coast of Malibu early this morning, but there were no reports of damage or injuries, authorities said.

“Nobody at the station felt it,” said Lt. Rich Erickson at the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department's Malibu/Lost Hills station. “And we had no reports or calls of anything having to do with any earthquake.”

The magnitude 3.2 quake was centered about 6 miles southwest of Malibu at 3:05 a.m., and rumbled from Agoura Hills to Thousand Oaks and even a bit in the Los Angeles Civic Center, the California Institute of Technology said on its website. Dozens of earthquakes occur each day, ranging from magnitude 0.1 to above 2.0 and occasionally slightly above 3.0, according to the website.
