Man killed outside Long Beach restaurant

8:01 AM | December 4, 2008

A man was shot and killed early this morning outside a restaurant-sports bar in the Belmont Shore area of Long Beach. Police found the man's body about 2 a.m. at Yankee Doodles in the 4100 block of East Ocean Boulevard, said Sgt. Dina Zapalski of the Long Beach Police Department.

The man, who was a patron of the bar, was pronounced dead at the scene. His body was near the rear entrance on East Olympic Plaza when police arrived. Police said they didn't know why he was shot, and no one has been arrested.

UPDATE: Los Angeles County coroner’s officials today identified the man as Michael Martoni, 36, of Long Beach. He died of gunshots, said coroner’s spokesman Ed Winter.

That was my boy who was killed. We called him "mad" mike. He was the nicest, down to earth dudes ive ever met. We all trained in jiu jitsu and i will miss rolling with him. May god rest his soul

When did an unfortunate murder become a soap box for marijuana cultivation and consumption? I think it's in appropriate to use this as a springboard for a discussion of medical marijuana.

Oh, and by the way, your case would be more compelling if you can spell correctly. It's "lose" not "loose."

Shut the dump down.

Sorry someone had to loose their life, it's a tragic and uneccasry story that happens all to often in the big city.

But I know for a fact that the Long Beach police department would much rather prosecute Medical Marijuana patients than to stop all the MURDER that goes on in the city.

They will close all the medical dispensaries so sick people cannot medicate. But no effort to solve murders. They feel like let them kill each other. I voted on prop. 215! It passed it is my right to be able to grow my own medicine. NOT in Long Beach, murder is ok! But if you plant a seed you stand to loose everything in this city!

Yankee Doodle is a fine pool hall/bar. It's unfortunate that this incident occurred. I'm sure the security cameras will yield some clue.

I think of Yankee Doodles as a pool hall with a alcohol license which serves food.

There have been many problems in the neighborhood associated with the patrons

Maybe it is time to restrict the sale of alcohol at the location after 8 PM

I was just forced to take my first furlough day last week because the City claims it has no money. Now...it's okay for the City to foot the bill for a public memorial for Michael Jackson?
