Woman burned at UCLA lab

December 29, 2008 |  5:13 pm

A 22-year-old woman suffered second-and third-degree burns over her upper body this afternoon when chemicals in a lab at UCLA's molecular science building caused a flash fire when they were mixed, the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

The woman, who was not identified, was taken to UCLA Medical Center for treatment of her burns shortly before 3 p.m.

The fire was out by the time firefighters arrived, a Fire Department spokeswoman said. Fire Department spokeswoman Melissa Kelley said the lab was sealed and all hazardous chemicals removed or neutralized after the incident. Arson investigators were looking into the incident but only as a matter of routine, Kelley said.
