Has Tom McClintock finally wrapped it up?

November 22, 2008 |  7:50 am

Tom McClintock thanks supporters for their help at his election night party in Roseville, Calif.

While thousands of votes remain to be counted, a spokesman for State Sen. Tom McClintock (R-Thousand Oaks) said Friday that it appeared he had enough votes to win election to a Northern California congressional seat.

Late Friday, McClintock moved out to a 1,793-vote lead over Democrat Charlie Brown for the Sacramento-area congressional seat, with the leader's campaign estimating that there were about 4,600 provisional and absentee ballots left to be counted.

"The votes are almost all in and the result is no longer in doubt," said Bill George, McClintock for Congress communications director. "With the small number of votes remaining to be counted, there is no way Charlie Brown can overcome McClintock's lead."

Not so fast, said Todd Stenhouse, a spokesman for Brown, who said the Democratic candidate was not yet ready to concede.
