The Rappin' Mathematician might be headed to the White House

3:37 PM | November 19, 2008

There may be hip-hop music in the White House soon, and it would have nothing to do with the tastes of outgoing chief George W. Bush or incoming president Barack Obama.

Alex Kajitani from Escondido, known nationwide as The Rappin' Mathematician, is California's nominee for the prestigious National Teacher of the Year competition, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell announced today. Kajitani uses music to make math more relevant to his students, O'Connell said. Kajitani is a California Teacher of the Year.

"I am exceptionally pleased that Alex Kajitani is representing California at the national level,'' O'Connell said. "I greatly admire his passion for teaching, his creative approach to motivating middle-grade students and his success in making math come alive and relevant.''

The National Teacher of the Year will be selected in spring 2009 by a panel convened by the Council of Chief State School Officers. All candidates will be honored at a White House ceremony.
