California pols rising in Obama's Washington

November 11, 2008 | 10:59 am

An Associated Press speculation list of who might join the Obama Cabinet doesn't include Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger but does have a few other California faces. One name is Los Angeles Police Chief William J. Bratton, who has insisted he's staying in L.A. Others on the list:

EPA Administrator

  • Mary Nichols, head of the California Air Resources Board

Homeland Security Secretary

  • Los Angeles Police Chief Bratton
  • Rep. Jane Harman (D-Venice), chairwoman of the Homeland Security intelligence subcommittee

Labor Secretary

  • Rep. George Miller (D-Martinez), chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee

Meanwhile, Time magazine is reporting that Rep. Henry A. Waxman (D-Beverly Hills) might be making a play to lead an influential House committee:

Oversight Committee Chairman Henry Waxman has been coveting Energy Committee Chairman John Dingell's job for, well, decades. But never before has Waxman so directly challenged Dingell –- who has sat atop the committee for 28 years -- so directly. It's hard to believe Waxman would make this bid without the support of Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi, a fellow Californian who tried quasi-successfully to do an end run of her own around Dingell when she created the Special Committee on Global Warming –- an issue that normally falls within the purview of the Detroit-loving Dingell's committee.
