Steve Lopez: Who’s paying Hummer gas bills?

4:22 PM | June 11, 2008

More than one reader has asked whether taxpayers are getting stuck with the tab when Los Angeles Deputy Mayor for Transportation Jaime de la Vega fills up his Hummer.

Last time I checked, the answer was no. If anyone at City Hall knows differently, feel free to weigh in. If you’d like to be more anonymous, e-mail me at steve.lopez@latimes.com.

Meanwhile, I’d like to thank De la Vega for keeping this story alive.

Read Steve Lopez's recent columns.

Maybe you should look at which vehicles REALLY pollute the most, rather than not using your brain, and figuring that, if it's a HUMMER, it must be the worst.

Here. It's a Top 10 list. Simple and easy for you to understand:

And if you can handle reading a little bit, take a look at this:

The answer is "YES" because he would take the fuel costs off his taxes. So, one way or another, we get stuck subsidizing the Hummer's fuel bill. De La Vega may not get the taxpayers of Los Angeles to subsidize his excesses, but if not the City, then the State. If not the State, then the Feds. And, it all depends on thee and me to fund the governing elites in whatever fashion their cold little hearts desire.

People would feel much happier about their city if they actually had public spaces and public transport they could rely on.
