Ferris wheel debuts on Santa Monica Pier on Thursday next Wednesday *updated

May 20, 2008 |  4:11 pm

will it be a wheel of fortune

*UPDATEd 4:20 pm

Scratch the Thursday ferris wheel extravaganza - the start date has just been pushed back almost an entire week to Wed., May 28, which means a Memorial Day weekend without a ferris wheel. Sheesh.

-------

Maybe you've seen the new ferris wheel going up at the Santa Monica Pier this week, all sleek and shiny silver. That minimalist look will soon be history, though, as 160,000 lights get added to the $1.5-million carnival ride for its debut this Thursday next Wednesday, May 28.

A big reveal is in the works, with a lighting ceremony at 8:45 p.m., then free rides and snacks  until midnight.  Maria Shriver's supposed to be there to get the $65,000 raised for the Special Olympics by the EBay sale of the old wheel. More info at the pier's web site.
