She did the time, but not the crime

5:01 PM | April 18, 2008

Cynthia_sommer_is_free After close to 2 1/2 years in jail in connection with an alleged murder for profit that her accusers now say never happened, Cynthia Sommer wants some coffee, a nice shrimp dinner, and maybe a lawsuit. Our own Tony Perry has the details:

On Thursday, [San Diego County] Dist. Atty. Bonnie Dumanis moved to dismiss murder charges against Sommer, telling reporters at a hastily called news conference that overlooked evidence and new scientific scrutiny had poked holes in the prosecution's assertion that she used arsenic to kill her husband, [Marine] Sgt. Todd Sommer.

Within hours of Dumanis' startling announcement, Sommer was free and surrounded by friends and family.

It's a tale of arsenic poisoning, bungled lab tests, breast implants and parties in Tijuana. The full scoop on Sommer (pictured here with her lawyer, Allen Bloom) in Tony's full story.

It may be wrong for her to sit in jail but that does not make her a good person. She has still had DCF called on her many times and her main concern now is to get to another man. She is not worried about her children as much as she says. I know the man that she is going to Florida to be with and they both have been a part of neglegting her children. Now he has one of his own and he has neglected that one. They are two people who are selfish and all about going out to party and staying home to do drugs. She may not have killed her husband that does make her a model citizen.

It is horrific what happened to Ms. Sommer. To be accused of a crime that never happened and convicted when evidence existed to clear her in the DA's possession left untested? And with the DA's own experts questioning the initial tests? The DA should resign over such a debacle of justice. The DA was overly protective of her tenure and the pursuit to win with total disregard of the truth. And now in the news her office is protecting an off duty officer who shot 4 bullets into a car occupied by an unarmed mother and child who were and hit by his fire in road rage?? Resignation is on order.

I'm glad the Episcopal Church, or at least half of it, is moving forward not backwards towards acceptance and growth.

- Righteous???, on the church's move toward ending a de facto ban on the ordination of gay bishops and sanctioning marriage blessings for same-sex couples
