Los Angeles firefighter Brent A Lovrien, 35, was killed, and his colleague, Anthony J. Guzman, 48, was seriously injured this afternoon after they were apparently hit by exploding manhole covers while responding to a call in Westchester, a department spokesman said.

Bob Pool and Molly Hennessy-Fiske have the full story.

More about the two men on the LAFD blog.

My heart goes out to Mr. Lovrien's family. I used to work at the Westchester Y and knew several of the firefighters from the nearby station. The men and women who die in the line of duty like this are truly heroes.

Firefighter's name is Brent Lovrien. He was my cousin. This is such a tragic accident.

Even as a kid, ever since I can remember, all he ever wanted was to be a fireman.

I still cannot believe it.
