Los Angeles firefighter Brent A Lovrien, 35, was killed, and his colleague, Anthony J. Guzman, 48, was seriously injured this afternoon after they were apparently hit by exploding manhole covers while responding to a call in Westchester, a department spokesman said.

Bob Pool and Molly Hennessy-Fiske have the full story.

Firefighter's name is Brent Lovrien. He was my cousin. This is such a tragic accident.

Even as a kid, ever since I can remember, all he ever wanted was to be a fireman.

I still cannot believe it.

My heart goes out to Mr. Lovrien's family. I used to work at the Westchester Y and knew several of the firefighters from the nearby station. The men and women who die in the line of duty like this are truly heroes.

My Name is Jason Bernal....I was Brent's new nieghbor....my sincere condolances go out to his family. I work for a local restraunt....I would like to donate some food for the family. I know how hard it is to cook or prepare food for the numerous people that come. The last thing you need to worry about is feeding people. So what ever I can do to help please let me know.....

God Bless
