118 Freeway mess

Here's what it looked like after a wrong-way driver slammed head-on into a big rig on the 118 Freeway late last night.

The big rig caught fire then exploded, sending nearby drivers fleeing. An SUV was in flames as well. Even as emergency crews raced to the scene, dry brush along the northern embankment of the freeway caught fire.

Police, who shut down the freeway, say at least three vehicles were involved. Authorities reopened the eastbound lanes of the freeway shortly after 5 a.m. The westbound lanes remained closed this morning (bottom photo).
