Beyond Baroque - the show goes on
A unanimous vote by the L.A. City Council this morning breathed new life into Beyond Baroque, the literary center in Venice, long a West Coast mecca for poets.
The Council's 11-0 vote (they can agree!) to extend the dollar-per-year lease another 25 years came in dramatic fashion, just hours before Beyond Baroque would have been officially homeless.
The center first took residence in half of the Old Venice Town Hall in October 1986. Francisco Vara-Orta has the full story.
Free verse for everyone!

Now let's get ourselves in gear and save Dutton's. With all who love and appreciate Dutton's (country- if not world-wide) we ought to be able to raise $500k!

Thank goodness that even in these times when the bottom line is money, the City Council recognizes that something as ephemeral as poetry is worthy of support. Especially so this week when we learned that one of our great resources, Dutton's Bookstore in Brentwood, will be closing its doors.
