Million Dollar Theater reopens

February 29, 2008 |  9:47 am

Theatre_jwz974ncIt cost Sid Grauman more than a million dollars to build in 1918 and took another million to refurbish. Now fans -- like Marco Lopez, above -- and preservationists think the Million Dollar Theater looks like a million bucks.

The single-screen movie palace, built in the Spanish Baroque style, seats more than 2,000. It became a Spanish-language playhouse and then a church before shutting its doors.

The re-do is part of the city's $36.5 million "Bringing Back Broadway" plan to revitalize the theater district.
