A sprawling view of the flames
Very interesting and important discussion by L.A. Land commenters on why people opt for suburban or sprawl type living. The fact that many if not most people find it unpleasant to live packed together like sardines is a thread that has gone largely unexplored among those who are trying to figure out how to keep development closer to the urban core. But I think that's not quite the same discussion as the one that needs to take place about whether we should continue to build in the fire zones. Here are a few links to some Times stories on the subject. If we have to sprawl, can't we do it somewhere else?

A Modest Proposal
We need more fires destroying more homes. The previous blog item talks about the oversupply of housing, yet builders still build. If we had more fires destroying more homes, there would be plenty of work for home builders without adding to the housing stock. Fires keep construction workers employed, a good thing in these hard times.

The other development option was and eventually will be again - farm land Do we really want to encourage the use of our food producing acreage to be covered in asphalt and concrete ? More and more we have to import our fruits and vegetables from outside our state and country.
It is just another one of those trade offs to live.
I was born and raised on a farm and cannot tolerate "center of town, flat land" city life. I'm glad that a lot of you do but I need to see more than roofs. That is why I live in the hills of South County.
I totally back you city dwellers. Go for it and enjoy it.
