Long live El Porto
Department of Bad Ideas: The best and the brightest of Manhattan Beach have realized their grand scheme to rename El Porto as "North Manhattan Beach."
The disapproving Manhattan Beach Confidential reports that new signs went up over the weekend (MB Confidential favored El Norte as the new name).
I wrote last year that I thought ditching the fun and funky El Porto name was a crummy idea, and it still is. Long live El Porto, aptly named scruffy urban beach and surf spot, and home of the best beach-shack breakfast burrito in town.

I don't blame them...if they are trying to change the city image and attrack a different crowd you have to change the name.

Seems Manhattan Beach has been taking lessons from the Congress. Why consider the voter's wishes when there's a lobbyist at your door with something the voters can pay for? Besides, why wouldn't locals want to trade a great tongue in cheek Spanish name for a northern prefix attached to the first real estate debacle (for the Indians) in America. Besides, it has a nice east coast feel to it. Now if the City Council could just get that pesky sun to rise over the ocean.
