Beloved children’s book author and illustrator Dr. Seuss -- Theodor Geisel -- was born on this day in 1904. Happy birthday, Dr. Seuss!

Dr. Seuss combined easy, silly rhymes, whimsically-drawn creatures with sometimes prickly personalities to tell stories that have stuck in the brains of generations of kids. His unforgettable books include ‘The Cat in the Hat,’ ‘Horton Hears a Who!’ ‘Green Eggs and Ham,’ ‘One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish,’ ‘Oh! The Places You’ll Go,’ and ‘The Lorax.’

Not so coincidentally, ‘The Lorax’ opens today, featuring the voices of Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Ed Helms and Betty White. It’s an animated version of Seuss’s story about a creature, the Lorax, who declares, ‘I speak for the trees.’ This sentiment was criticized by conservative activist Dan Gainor, who told The Times, ‘I don’t want the moron writers of ‘The Lorax’ trying to indoctrinate children and turn them into millions of little eco-warriors.’

If Dr. Seuss was around, maybe he could write a book about a Grinch who steals children’s stories.

After the jump, the trailer for ‘The Lorax.’

This is the perfect day to remember another book from Dr. Seuss: ‘Happy Birthday to You!’

Today you are you! That is truer than true! There is no one alive who is you-er than you!

Happy 108th birthday, Dr. Seuss!
