Obama’s summer 2011 reading list

President Obama went book shopping Friday at the independent bookstore Bunch of Grapes on Martha’s Vineyard. While there he picked up two books, the White House confirms. Those were Ward Just’s novel ‘Rodin’s Debutante,’ set in Chicago, and ‘The Bayou Trilogy,’ a set of three novellas by Daniel Woodrell, author of ‘Winter’s Bone.’
But that’s not all the recreational reading material the president has for his summer vacation. The White House press office said he brought three books with him, two novels and a history. One novel is Abraham Verghese’s bestseller ‘Cutting for Stone’; the other is ‘To the End of the Land’ by David Grossman, a sweeping story of a family in Isreal that was a finalist for the 2010 National Book Critics Circle Award in fiction. The last book was the 2010 NBCC winner in nonfiction: Isabel Wilkerson’s ‘The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America’s Great Migration.’
Chances are Obama is reading some other things, too. Even though he’s on vacation, he’s probably keeping up with the news.
