Apple, a company that isn't known for turning up at trade shows, will make its first appearance at Book Expo America next week in New York City. Apple will take a prime spot at publishing's biggest convention near its biggest publisher, Random House, not far from Disney and MacMillan.

Paid Content isn't sure what Apple will be doing at Book Expo, writing, "It's not immediately clear what Apple has in store for BEA. Its attendance doesn’t appear to be linked to any device announcement or software upgrade."

On the Publishers Weekly blog PWxyz, Craig Teicher writes, "different sources speculate Apple will be there merely to promote iBooks, or, more interestingly, to announce some kind of promotion tied in with the 10th anniversary of its retail stores (which seems unlikely, given that iBooks is digital and the retail stores are brick-and-mortar)."

The Unofficial Apple Weblog TUAW speculates, somewhat wildly, that Apple might be planning to announce an Apple digital library.

In 2009, after the fierce storms that hit the fall 2008 economy, Book Expo went through some serious contractions. It shifted from a weekend to a weekday conference; instead of moving between major American cities, it decided to stay in its home port, New York. And it saw many major publishers pulling back on their "on the floor" booth presence. Some skipped the booths altogether, doing business in more out-of-the-way meeting rooms.

Maybe they're coming back, or maybe Apple has grabbed a prime publishing house spot. Last year, the closest the iPad maker got to Book Expo was this nearby billboard.
