Los Angeles chronicler and self-proclaimed Demon Dog James Ellroy has been awarded the French Order of Arts and Letters, an official state honor.
On Sunday, France’s culture minister, Frederic Mitterrand, awarded honors to Ellroy and other prominent cultural figures, including American actress Eva Marie Saint and UCLA professor Alain Mabanckou, who was born and raised in Congo and educated in Paris. Mabanckou, whose novels have received much acclaim in France, was given the French Legion of Honor.
Mitterrand said Ellroy is ‘the master of dark dreams’ and called him ‘one of the most prominent names in modern literature,’ according to a reportby AFP.
James Ellroy is known for his noir mysteries ‘The Black Dahlia’ and ‘L.A. Confidential.’ He recently hosted the television series ‘James Ellroy’s LA: City of Demons’ for cable channel Investigation Discovery. His most recent book is the memoir ‘The Hilliker Curse: My Pursuit of Women.’
