Mohamed ElBaradei’s book to be rushed to shelves

In recent days, Mohamed ElBaradei has emerged as a leader in the protests against the Egyptian government. His new prominence has prompted publisher Metropolitan Books to move up the publication date of his book, previously slated for June, to April.

‘The Age of Deception: Nuclear Diplomacy in Treacherous Times’ is the Nobel laureate’s account of his three terms as director general of the U.N.’s International Atomic Energy Agency. It was ElBaradei’s work toward nuclear nonproliferation that earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2005.

Now, of course, ElBaradei is involved in an entirely different kind of international politics. Hundreds of thousands of protestors filled the streets of Cairo on Tuesday calling for longtime Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down. ‘The protesters demand an end to what they describe as a repressive, incompetent and corrupt regime that has failed to improve the lives of ordinary people while restricting civil liberties and violating human rights,’ Jeffrey Fleishman and Ned Parker report for the L.A. Times. ‘Though leaderless, they appear to have coalesced around Mohamed ElBaradei, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and former secretary general of the International Atomic Energy Agency.’

‘The Age of Deception’ is ElBaradei’s first book.
