Spike Lee draws crowd to Eso Won Books

New York filmmaker Spike Lee was in Liemert Park at Eso Won Books on Saturday night to sign copies of ‘Spike Lee: Do the Right Thing,’ a behind-the-scenes look at his breakthrough 1989 film. More than 100 people waited in a line that stretched down Dengan Street, and after getting books signed, fans and friends mingled outside.
‘For the first time, we pushed people to buy the book here,’ said owner James Fugate, adding that his independent store can’t compete with the lower prices that chains sometimes offer. Customers responded well, picking up copies of Lee’s new book, his childrens books and DVDs of his movies. Next month, the bookstore will host hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons, who will be signing copies of his new book, ‘Super Rich.’
Meanwhile, Lee is still in town -- he’s signing his book Sunday at 3 p.m. at Book Soup in West Hollywood.
