Salman Rushdie comes to L.A.

Author Salman Rushdie -- make that Sir Salman Rushdie -- is coming to Los Angeles Nov. 30. That’s just two weeks after the American release of his new novel ‘Luka and the Fire of Life,’ a sort-of sequel to his 1990 fable ‘Haroun and the Sea of Stories.’ Rushdie says he wrote the book for his youngest son.
Rushdie will be speaking at the L.A. Public Library’s ALOUD series at the Aratani/Japan America Theatre. Tickets for the event, on sale now, are $25 and $17.50 for associates of the Library Foundation, which supports L.A.’s public libraries.
In October, Rushdie made a splash by announcing his next project: a memoir covering his years living under the fatwa issued by Ayatollah Khomeini. In 1989, Khomeini issued a fatwa calling for Rushdie’s death over his novel ‘The Satanic Verses.’ The controversy propelled Rushdie both to worldwide literary fame and into hiding. He and his wife were put under round-the-clock protection by Scotland Yard.
Random House will publish the memoir worldwide in 2012. Calling it ‘one of the most far-reaching multi-national and multi-language book publishing deals by one publisher for a single title,’ Random House said the deal was ‘unprecedented in scope.’
Rushdie has returned to a more public life since 1998, when the call for assassination was lifted. These days, he can even undertake a traditional book tour.
