'Editor & Publisher' magazine replaces editorial staff
Publishing troubles have again hit "Editor & Publisher," a magazine once called the "bible of the newspaper industry." At the beginning of 2010, it closed its doors -- but was bought, two weeks later, by the Irvine-based Duncan McIntosh Co. On Friday, the three key editorial staffers who had survived previous cuts were laid off -- apparently, via e-mail.
Managing Editor Shawn Moynahan sent an e-mail to colleagues, saying, "The editorial staff of Editor & Publisher has been eliminated by its new owners, Duncan McIntosh Co. Inc. As such, I'm writing to let you know I am no longer E&P's managing editor/online editor." Former E&P editor Greg Mitchell, who now writes for The Nation, was one recipient.
"McIntosh, when he took over the magazine, vowed (in a meeting with me) that his first order of business was a complete redesign of the magazine's once-popular and influential dinosaur of a Web site," Mitchell wrote. "The magazine had long advocated shifts to the Web, even holds an annual new media conference, but its site continued to lack video and comments, among other modern features. (It hadn't gotten a facelift since 2002). That never happened."
Three staffers from other parts of Duncan McIntosh will fill the editorial slots in an effort to consolidate far-flung operations, according to a report at the Maynard Institute, which does not note what positions the three had previously held. The report quotes a release from Duncan McIntosh saying that, "'Editor & Publisher' magazine will be utilizing more individuals for the print edition who are experts in their individual fields as opposed to reporters who track down experts and put the expert’s story into the writer’s words."
Might as well let those words speak for themselves.
