Keeping up with the Festival of Books

Eric Carle, the author and illustrator of ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ and this year’s Festival of Books logo, tells Sonja Bolle, ‘my books are made for two days in a child’s life: the last day at home and the first day of school. Home is touching, and warmth, and the familiar, and school is something surprising, something new.’ He’ll be at the festival on Saturday, signing items at the L.A. Times booth at 11a.m. and reading at the Target Children’s Stage at 2:40 p.m.

There are 45 nominees for the L.A. Times Book Prizes, which will be awarded in a ceremony tonight. Watch this space for the full story — and for instant gratification, keep your eye on Twitter.

Carolyn Kellogg is a prize-winning writer who served as Books editor of the Los Angeles Times for three years. She joined the L.A. Times in 2010 as staff writer in Books and left in 2018. In 2019, she was a judge of the National Book Award in Nonfiction. Prior to coming to The Times, Kellogg was editor of LAist.com and the web editor of the public radio show Marketplace. She has an MFA in creative writing from the University of Pittsburgh and a BA in English from the University of Southern California.
