Village Books in Pacific Palisades is teetering, but it’s got star power on its side. In an effort, as its website says, ‘to raise funds to help the bookstore stay in business,’ Tom Hanks will make an appearance Wednesday. Tom Hanks DVDs and related books (like ‘The Da Vinci Code’ and ‘John Adams’ by David McCullough) will be for sale. The Oscar winner will sign them — but no photos or other memorabilia, and nothing that doesn’t have a Village Books receipt. The bookstore recommends making your purchase(s) in advance (see the website for details). Tom Hanks is scheduled to appear at 7 p.m.; show up when you will to get your Hanks in time for the holidays.

On Tuesday at 7 p.m., Carrie Fisher will be at Book Soup to read from her memoir ‘Wishful Drinking.’ In it, she admits to drinking, taking pills, talking to Cary Grant about dropping acid and her struggles with manic depression. She also riffs on her marriages, her crazy Hollywood pedigree and what it’s like to be the woman who wore the metal bikini in ‘Return of the Jedi.’ She will sign copies of her book. Whether or not she’ll sign your cherished vintage poster of her in that metal bikini probably depends on what kind of mood she’s in. Realize, her book warns you: that mood is subject to change.
