• The science fiction-focused Hugo Awards were announced: Michael Chabon's "The Yiddish Policemen's Union" takes top honors. The book was also nominated for a mystery-focused Edgar Award.

Julia Child was a spy? Mon dieu! Pass the sherry!

• For some Alzheimer's patients, "Tyger tyger" leads directly to "burning bright."

• The writers behind the TV show "How I Met Your Mother" will pen "The Bro Code," a guy guide in the voice of retro-chauvinist character Barney Stinson, played by Neil Patrick Harris.

• NPR reporter Ivan Watson talks to Jason Goodwin, a historian turned mystery writer whose books are set in Istanbul, a city with many bookstores.

• The funeral for Mahmoud Darwish was attended by so many fans that it "amounted to an unofficial state funeral."

• Another gypsy for the Guardian's list: Gypsy Lou Webb. The 91-year old former publisher ushered Charles Bukowski's first full-length book into the world. (via)
