Willowbrook: Stacy Johnson, 42

Stacy Johnson, a 42-year-old black man, died Monday, Dec. 14, two decades after he was shot in the 2300 block of East 126th Street in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Johnson was shot in 1989 and as a result of his injuries was left a paraplegic. Winter said Johnson had suffered from ulcers for years and had more recently developed sepsis, which ultimately caused his death.

Winter said Johnson was living in a care facility and was transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. Dec. 14. Winter said that because the gunshot wound in 1989 caused the medical condition that led to Johnson's death the case is considered a homicide by the coroner's definition.

Winter said another person was shot and killed in the 1989 incident, and that someone was tried and acquitted of the crime. He had no other details on the case. Detectives said they were still researching the case and needed more time before they could comment or provide more information.

Willowbrook: Manuel Melgoza, 35

Manuel Melgoza Jr., a 35-year-old Latino, died on Thursday, Sept. 17, after he was shot in the 13200 block of Mona Boulevard in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Melgoza, of Compton, was standing outside a residence with his wife when two men drove up and one of them opened fire on the couple, said Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office. Melgoza was shot at about 8:55 p.m. and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:12 p.m., Winter said.

Coroner's officials did not know if Melgoza's wife sustained any injuries in the incident.

Willowbrook: Luis Flores, 66

Luis Flores, a 66-year-old Latino, was shot several times in the 2000 block of East El Segundo Boulevard in Willowbrook on July 25, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Flores, of Los Angeles, was killed on the sidewalk outside a residence known as a site for cockfights, according to a coroner’s official.

Sheriff's officials said Flores got into an argument with another man about 2:40 p.m.

"Apparently the argument escalated with both men producing handguns and they started shooting at each other," said  Deputy Derrick Thompson.

Flores died at the scene, authorities said. The suspect, who fled, is believed to have been injured in the gunfight.

Willowbrook: Adrian Soto, 22

Adrian Soto, a 22-year-old Latino, was shot and killed Saturday, July 25,  in the 2500 block of East 132nd Street in Willowbrook, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Soto was standing on the sidewalk with two other men about 3:45 p.m. when a car pulled up and someone inside the vehicle "began firing an assault rifle at the group," according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Two other men standing on the sidewalk were not hurt in the attack, the Sheriff’s Department said.
