Times coverage: Authorities investigating shooting death of attorney examine 2005 case

December 18, 2009 |  2:16 pm

50963232

Jeffrey Tidus, a 53-year-old white man, was shot and killed Tuesday, Dec. 8, in the 4600 block of Sugarhill Drive in Rolling Hills Estates, authorities said. Coroner's officials said police have placed a security hold on the case, which bars them from giving out any additional information.

The following is an excerpt from Times coverage of the killing: Authorities investigating shooting death of attorney examine 2005 case

Detectives investigating the shooting death of Jeffrey Tidus, a prominent L.A. lawyer, are examining a 2005 case in which the attorney obtained a restraining order against a litigant who allegedly had threatened him, according to sheriff's deputies.

The case is one of several being looked at as detectives pore over Tidus' files seeking clues, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Lt. Dave Dolson said.

He stressed that the investigation is in its early stages and there is no evidence that Tidus' work was tied to his slaying.

Tidus was killed Monday night outside his home in Rolling Hills Estates.

Dolson said colleagues at Tidus' law firm had alerted investigators to the 2005 case this week. In that case, Tidus' client, Jon M. Gunderson, sued a Los Angeles tax attorney, Christopher Gruys.

The suit claimed that Gruys had mishandled a tax transaction, costing Gunderson millions of dollars. Tidus eventually won an $11.2-million judgment.

During a pretrial deposition in the case on June 7, 2005, Gruys pulled out a camera and took a photograph of Tidus, then made what the attorney interpreted as a threat, according to sworn declarations that Tidus and a court reporter made in support of Tidus' request for a restraining order against Gruys.

Venice: Eun Kang, 38

Kang

Eun Kang, a 38-year-old Korean woman, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, after she was raped and stabbed in the 1600 block of Electric Avenue in Venice, authorities said.

At the time of her death Kang was pregnant with twins. One was a boy, the other's gender was not listed in coroner's records. Kang was pronounced dead at 11:15 p.m., and the unborn child listed as a boy was pronounced dead three minutes later.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said the second unborn child was discovered by coroner's examiners the next day so the time of death is listed as 3:10 p.m. Dec 9.

-- Anthony Pesce

The following is an excerpt from L.A. Now coverage of the killings: Suspect charged in rape, slaying of pregnant Venice woman spent time at state mental facility

The location where Eun Kang was attacked. Click for the Venice Mapping L.A. page to learn more about the demographics of the neighborhood. Boneetio Kentro Washington, of Culver City, who is accused of raping and fatally stabbing a Venice woman who was four and half months pregnant with twins, spent time at a state mental facility earlier this year, according to law enforcement sources.

[A previous version of this post incorrectly said Kang was two months pregnant at the time of her death.]

LAPD detectives said they are trying to determine whether he is connected to other crimes in the area.

Washington has been arrested and charged with capital murder.

Police said they believe the attack was random and that Kang didn’t know Washington. Santiago Ortiz, 62, who lived in the same apartment complex as Kang, said he did not see her very often because “she worked all the time.”

He said that when she ran into him, she always said hello with a smile. Ortiz said Kang moved in several years ago and lived in the apartment by herself.

“She was quiet and friendly,” he said. “I felt very sad that something so disturbing happened to her. It’s terrible.”

Cudahy: Roshdi Abuawad, 27

December 15, 2009 | 11:15 am

The location Roshdi Abuawad was dragged to. Credit: Google Maps Roshdi Abuawad, a 27-year-old man identified by coroner's officials as Middle Eastern, died Sunday, Dec. 13, after he was hit by a car and dragged to Atlantic Avenue and Lake Avenue in Cudahy, authorities said.

Abuawad was leaving a Starbucks in Bell on Sunday when he was dragged and killed by a motorist who had just used his car to try to ram another group of people, investigators said.

Miguel Penayo, 32, was arrested at the scene on Atlantic Avenue after the chaotic 9:40 a.m. incident, which began with a traffic collision, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff"s Department. Streets in the area were closed for several hours as police searched for the driver and then investigated the crash.

After the traffic accident, Penayo and a group of men apparently from the other vehicle ended up on opposite sides of the street. The group began approaching Penayo in a threatening manner, deputies said, with one man carrying a metal rod.

Penayo drove his car directly at the group, striking one of the men. His car continued across Atlantic Avenue and into a driveway at a Starbucks near Florence Avenue, where his vehicle hit Abuawad.

Abuawad had been dragged under Penayo's vehicle for over a mile and was pronounced dead at the scene, the department said. The other victim hit by Penayo received minor injuries and was treated by fire rescuers at the scene.
