On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

Willowbrook: Stacy Johnson, 42

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Johnson was shot in 1989 and as a result of his injuries was left a paraplegic. Winter said Johnson had suffered from ulcers for years and had more recently developed sepsis, which ultimately caused his death.

Winter said Johnson was living in a care facility and was transferred to a hospital where he was pronounced dead at 6:38 p.m. Dec. 14. Winter said that because the gunshot wound in 1989 caused the medical condition that led to Johnson's death the case is considered a homicide by the coroner's definition.

Winter said another person was shot and killed in the 1989 incident, and that someone was tried and acquitted of the crime. He had no other details on the case. Detectives said they were still researching the case and needed more time before they could comment or provide more information.

He was in a care facility but the cause of death was a 20 year old gunshot wound?Sounds like we should take the "care" word ot of that facility.

Davidozone, I've noticed your comments throughout this site. Believe it or not, you are not funny. Some humor around here could be appreciated, but your non observant, 'off the cuff' comments aren't as quick and sharp as you'd like to think they are. You should try some of this 'material' in front of an audience and you'll see what I mean. Because I try to find the positive in everything (at the risk of sounding insensitive myself), the only insight you inspire here is that, after reading your comments, it makes me realize why people kill each other. Maybe you make yourself laugh when you type your witless remarks, but must you do it so cheaply at the expence of people that have just died. You are always misinformed and pointless in your observations. You have nothing of value to add, but you continue to add. You seem to value your whit in a class with President Kennedy or Lenny Bruce, but you really come across more like President Bush mixed with Carrot Top. If you're as droll and insensitive to people in your real life as you come across on this site, I wouldn't be surprised to read about you here one day; as a victim. I know you must want to keep your comedy timing sharp, but please give our 'gag' reflexes a break. Now, may this gentleman rest in peace.

Death is probably a relief from pain for him. Hopefully the killer will be caught soon, so that the family of Winter can see justice served.

Cedar,
Thank you for articulating in words what everyone else must be thinking when they see these type of comments. The quality of life this man had to endure for the last twenty years makes this story that much more heartbreaking. Well done.
