Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

Valinda: Steven Valadez, 19

October 20, 2009 | 10:46 pm

The location where Steven Valadez was stabbed.Steven Valadez, a 19-year-old Latino, was stabbed to death Sunday, Oct. 18, in the 16200 block of Maplegrove Street in Valinda, authorities said.

Valadez, a musician, was attacked about 12:13 a.m. during “a fight with several other males," according to a statement from the L.A. County Sheriff's Department. He was taken to a hospital where he died about 5:15 a.m, authorities said.

Valadez was a member of the La Puente-based band Rumor Has It, which memorialized him on its MySpace page and linked to an article about the incident in the San Gabriel Valley Tribune.

“To those of you who don't already know, or weren't with us last night. Tragedy struck us hard. Our bass player and brother Steven, was killed last night in an ugly brawl in our hometown,” the message read. “To call Steven a 'friend' would be a total understatement of what he meant to us.”

The message indicated that another band member, Adam Garcia, also was injured.

“As for our future, we're gonna take some time to slowly regroup and try to get over this," the MySpace message stated. "Adam was also wounded last night too. Adam is doing fine, but is still in medical care.”

Authorities said no arrests were immediately made in the case.
