On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

The shooting was reported about 1:15 a.m., said Deputy Aura Sierra.

Deputies were attempting to detain two suspected car thieves when they ran away, Sierra said.  When they cornered one of the men, he pulled out a knife, she said.

“Fearing for his safety, one of the deputies fired several rounds from his weapon, hitting the suspect,” Sierra said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, Sierra said. No deputies were injured.

A knife was recovered at the scene, she said.

The second suspect remains at large, authorities said.

I suppose now it's time for someone to complain about the police killing people and what not, or perhaps I just prevented that from that from happening.

police keep using guns as if it was a toy bratton and lee baca are doing a horrible job by not punishing these police that are killing people from the community.

Dan, just what did the police do wrong? Dont you think knives can kill?

If the police did not do anything wrong then why is there an investigation going on now? Everyone thinks that police can't make mistakes. The supposed "suspects" are the ones that have to pay for it.

Sonia, there is always an investigation after an officer involved shooting, to determine what happened and if the shooting was according to policy.

If there were serious deviations from policy, it will be up to the DA to file charges and bring this to trial.

The fact that the deceased was armed with a deadly weapon and acted in a violent and evasive manner, is an indication that he was a dangerous threat to the public, in which he brought his own misfortune upon himself.

Don't bring a knife to a gun fight.

If he would have complied to the officers orders he would have been in jail instead of the ground.
