Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail [email protected], and we will do our best to respond.

Edward Carr_1
Edward Carr, a 17-year-old black male, was shot and killed Wednesday, Sept. 30, in the 14600 block of South Atlantic Ave. in Compton.

Carr was taken to St. Francis Medical Center where he was determined to be brain dead later that day. He was taken off life support and pronounced dead Oct. 3.

Det. Howard Cooper of the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau said Carr was walking home from school about 5 p.m. when he was approached by at least two Latino males. Carr was shot once in the head, according to the coroner's report.

Carrmap Cooper said Carr was not robbed and it was unclear if he saw his assailants approaching. The two males fled after the shooting.

School officials said Carr had attended Dominguez High School until January, when he transferred to Lifeline Charter School in Compton.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.

How many more Edward Carrs is it going to take before we realize that "WE", not just Edward's family, have a problem in our communities? We sit around and gasp our breath and put our hands over our hearts with relief because it wasn't our loved ones who were murdered. Do you really think you're safe? If you're that naive to the murdered victims, you're really naive that the murderers just may be living in your home! Get Involved by Choice Not Force! Don't become a "Breaking News" segment of the News.

this is sad. all the killing in compton over all these years is for NOTHING worth a human life. that's why i created Hub City Livin - to shed light on all that is good and positive in Compton. The world knows about the murder rate already; It's time for the world to know about the success rate too. I hope they find the killers and bring them to justice.

My prayers go out to the family. I used to live in LA when I was in my 20's and I was in different parts of SCLA allot back in the 1980's and 90's. Now it appears to me that there's a kill the innocent "you get one of mine and I'll get one of yours attitude. That's not media hype, it's here for the world to read.

Before we send the National Guard off anywhere else in the world, somebody in the State who has the authority should think about getting federal funds for more police and sending in the Guard to protect every day citizens from being killed.

MAN---im so tired of this bull crap. How is a young boy gonna get killed ON ATLANTIC in BROAD DAYLIGHT..and the suspects are still free? Man...Im gonna get me a gun. Cus I have been stopped by the LA Sheriff, Long Beach Police so many times...its not even funny. I go to work at the Ports of LA and Long Beach as a LongShore worker..pay my taxes...and work on my gawd dang cars...thats all I do...but I get stopped by these dammm cops all the time. They however do not get to catch the gang bangers walkin up and down the streets and alleys with guns....how the hell is that?.......Readin this story of Edward Carr...is like a tipping point. Maybe I should get a gun---maybe I wont be stopped so much. To you cops out there---how is this fair?...Why would a 27 year old law abiding citizen as myself get stopped by the police so many times all the time...and why arent you guys getting these killers caught and arrested? Im ready to cry......this is too much ...its depressing. I think I got it bad..cuz..I lost my home...I think I got it bad..cus the port is basically dead...I think I got it bad cus im broke.....I think I got it bad......cus I get stopped?......man.....we got a nother black kid dead and nobody cares....im crying now...I am..cus I donnt hate anybody...I like mexicans...asians...whites...everybody..I have friends in all colors from rich to poor and in between...but man...this kid get shot in the head and die in the dirt...............how could I not read this and not cry?...............I dont have it that bad...Im still alive. My birthday was tuesday October 6. I just turned 27. Thank god...you gangbangers out there...this has gottin out of hand. Daam stop the cycle...it takes real men to stop the bull. Runnin up on somebody by surprise and executing them is not putting in work. You guys my laugh at me and my tears..at my pain for reading this..but you will have to answer to god....I normally read these stories...and keep it pushin...but daam...when I see candles in the dirt...how many times are we black and hispanic men are killed in the dirt by each other. Man...life is good. Life is to be lived. How could you gangsters.;..so called gangsters do this to your fellow man?.......

I'm sorry to hear about Boo. he was a cool little kid. He was one of the last people i talked to before leaving to Arkansas. I saw that he was headed in the wrong direction and step dad wasn't making it any easier. Too many young ones gone too soon. my heart goes out to his family, and hope that we all learn that there is no future in joining gangs. unfortunately some of us had to learn the hard way and I truely wish it didn't have to be that way.

VICKY, theres been an obvious problem in these communities for 30 years now. The change must come from within these neighborhoods and it must occur every election day. Why not hold to account the "do nothing" politicians who's only solutions involve blaming others.

Instead of criticizong the police, why not a show of support for them? Why not hold the school boards accountable for a quality education and support them when they need to remove troublesome students? Why not support civilized behavior and not the sociopathic "rap" mentality?

Another shooting by cowards of someone that cant shoot back, you wimps are real brave when you have an advantage over innocent people that you creep up on, when they are minding their own business and are not gang banging. The most cowardly gang members think that they are putting in work or getting stripes for killing children. And have the nerve to be a racist, you dont know what racisim is all about. If you were in a real war, you punks would not stand a chance in hell.My gun is like american express, I dont leave home without it. I'm tired of cowards that think a gun makes you god. I'll see you punks down the road one day.

If we can make just one person be a parent to their child and reward the ones that are great parents, then maybe we can make a difference. Being a good dad doesnt mean just stopping bye to see their kid every now and again, being a good dad is someone who marries their "baby mamma" and shows their child how to take care of a women and raise a good family..

THATS RIGHT BRO (LILTRAIN) FOR SEEING THE TRUTH. THE MEXICANS HAVE BEEN WARING WITH US BLACK PEOPLE FOR SOME YEARS NOW BUT SILENTLY . TO ME ITS COWARDLY.
