Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Daisy Flores, a 26-year-old Latina, died Friday, Sept. 4 from complications related to a shooting eight years ago at Malabar Street and Evergreen Avenue in Boyle Heights, according to Los Angeles County coroner's officials.

Ed Winter, a spokesman for the coroner's office, said Flores was shot in the spine in a gang-related shooting. The gunfire left her a quadriplegic, he said.

Winter said Flores died of pneumonia. She was in a hospital at the time of her death.

No information about the circumstances surrounding her shooting eight years ago was immediately available.

i have to admit this report upset me. Daisy Flores's story is sad. she was a young mother of two small children. i knew her, her sister is my sister in law. she was an innocent victim who was shot at the age of 17. she was not in any gang, she was just at the wrong place and sadly the bullet changed her life. in the past 8 years she lived stuck to a wheelchair, which made it hard for her to give her son all the care he needed but he was her light and happiness. Her death had nothing to do with the accident 8 years ago. in fact her family is asking for answers, at the time of her death, she had been in the hospital for a little more than a month. During this time she also had her second child. she died at white memorial hospital in east los Angeles. Daisy's family honestly believes it was negligence from the hospital which they believe caused her death. The family has began an investigation because on the day of Daisy Flores death another patient which shared her room also died only a few minutes after her. They were both in the hospital about the same amount of time, they had most of the same medical treatment, they shared a room and now they share the same day of their death, Friday, September 4,2009. She will be missed by her family, husband and two young children.

I would have to agree that this article is not accurate. The only true fact would be that Daisy Flores decease of Pneumonia. She did have complications but it had nothing to do with the shooting, it all had to do for what she was hospitalize for which was Pneumonia. She will forever be remember as a strong and brave daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend.

Daisy Flores was never involved in any gangs, her life changed completely due to the incedent eight years ago. "She was a victim of a crime" But that did not stop her from making her life. She graduated school and married becoming an Independent mother of two adorable children. The fact of the shooting eight years ago and her being paralyzed had nothing to do with her death. Don't you stop and think how the mother and father of Daisy Flores will feel once they come about this newspaper article. The Flores Family has been going trough so much these past days "Why bring back those memories to them" Where is the Respect ? "Show some compassion!"

My opinion is that some of the information written on this report was unnecessary. A true composer always does his research before the information is released to the media. In your case it seems that you just decided to compose what will bring publicity.

Who I'm I ?
Daisy Flores sister in law (Angel) and proud to have spoke my mind.
