On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

Adams-Normandie: Martha Cruz, 18

August 7, 2009 |  9:33 pm
Location of Martha Cruz's shooting. Click to learn more about the demographics of this area. Martha Cruz, an 18-year-old Latina, was fatally shot Aug. 1. She was shot while sitting in a car that was stopped at a red light in the 2900 block of South Normandie Avenue in Adams-Normandie, authorities said. Cruz was taken to a hospital where she died a short time later.

Cruz was riding in the back seat when the driver stopped for a red light. Her cousin and two friends were also in the car, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

While the driver was waiting for the light to turn green, another car – described by LAPD as a "light colored four-door sedan with tinted windows" – pulled up next to them. The front-seat passenger in the sedan shouted to Cruz's car, asking the occupants where they were from, according to the LAPD.

This is a common question asked before gang-related homicides, meant as an opportunity for the victim to identify his or her gang affiliation, according to the LAPD.

The passenger in the sedan then pulled out a chrome revolver and fired several shots into the vehicle, hitting Cruz. The driver took her to the hospital, where she died, according to the LAPD.

Anyone with information about this killing is asked to call LAPD Southwest Division Dets. Dave Dilkes or Sean Hansen at (213) 485-1383.

OMG, WHY IS IT THAT MOST OF THE PEOPLE THINK EVERYTHING HAS TO BE RELATED TO GANGS. THIS MURDER DOESN'T MAKE SINCE, MARTHA IS IN MY PRAYERS, I HOPE HER FAMILY IS ALRIGHT.

Lori, when someone asks "where they are from" and then empties a gun into the indivduals car, that's a great indication that it is gang related.
