Compton: Avery Cody Jr., 16
Avery Cody Jr., a 16-year-old black youth, was shot by a sheriff's deputy and died July 5 at Alondra Boulevard and Poinsettia Avenue in Compton, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.
The only information released by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department about the incident was that a loaded handgun was recovered from the scene of the shooting.
"The involved personnel were on routine patrol at the time," said Sgt. David Insante, a spokesman for the Sheriff's Department.
Coroner's investigators said Cody was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead at 4:05 p.m.
Insante said he did not know when or if his office would release details about what happened leading up to the shooting.
UPDATE:
Updated Times coverage of the shooting: Video fails to show if teen killed by deputy had a gun

And they know if they will release any information! I wonder why?

This should not be tolerated. Once again LAPD has to answer for killing another black person. Enough !!! How are they going to justify this one? It' s up to all of us to make sure they are held accountable. Next time it just might be your sons life they take. What Cowards!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 16 years old. Peace after revoultion pepole

I truly am glad this article is posted under the subheading "THE HOMICIDE REPORT", because this incident was unquestionably a homicide by a deputy sheriff... as the world will find out soon.

I am truly grateful that this is listed in "The Homicide Report", because Avery is unquestionably a homicide victim of the LA Sheriff's department... as the world will soon know.

they have to write the police report, have it reviewed by superiors, edit it, revise it, have it reviewed by attorneys, revise again, and then issue the "truth" to the public. it will take awhile to get thier story straight to justify the shooting. Its a joke, the reports are written with the goal in mind of finding "justified shooting" not to actually convey what happened then let the public decide. Its working backwards. YOu write the end of the book "justified shooting" then fill in the facts you need to get there. Its COP 101, and the public is so misled to think cops are somehow more truthful than the rest of us. In my experience they lie more than average bc they feek justified.

It amazing how people that have no information about a situation can come to a conclusion in this case.
There is an investigation thats being conducted will reveal what actually occurred.
But some peole would prefer to hold true to the statement, "Dont confuse me with the facts, my mind is made up".

I wasn't there. Neither were any of you. I always assume that the person must have been doing something wrong. Remember what assuming does. i trust the police before people's friends. though.

I don't know anything about the young man that was murdered by the sheriffs. Maybe he deserved this outcome. More than likely, there was another option, even if he was involved in some criminal activity. Regardless, some of us have had no real experience in the criminal realm and have felt the strong arm of the law wrapped tight around our necks, no matter how far and away from trouble we have stayed. Obeying the law has no guarantee of good LAPD or sheriff's dept. karma. You seem very much out of reality to me.
Posted by: Norwood Fisher | July 10, 2009 at 09:12 PM
Simply because the young male is 16yrs old does not automatically make him a victim in this case. Children these days want to live their lives as if they are untouchable and run around with guns and endanger those around them. All police depts are trained to do one main thing, PROTECT THE PUBLIC. Any person who is carrying an armed weapon is a danger to themselves and to the public; therefore they must all be protected in any which way. It is unfortuante that the young boys life was taken from him, but this should be a lesson for all the young women and men that are running around and casuing havoc everywhere around LA and the United States in general. Behave yourselves and if you are pulled over by a police officer, do as you are told and horrible things like this will not occur. To everyone else who is blaming the officer, put your feet in his/her shoes for a moment and ask yourself what you would have done. Forget the fact that you know this boy is only 16. All you know is he is armed and has the capability of shooting you and others around you.

I am interested in if the weapons found on the body of the people recently shot by LA County Sheriff officers are registered or unregistered? Also, I would like to know if these men's fingerprints were actually found on the weapons. The LA Times does not cover this aspect of these murders. Also, in none of these recent shootings can the LA Sheriff officer claim that anyone shot at them. So, why the killings? Are these men shot in the back or in the front of their bodies? That is another question.

What I do not understand is how anyone who is a law abiding citizen would run from the cops. Every time this happens there is always the comments that he was such a good kid, he never got into trouble, the police are murderers. That is as idiotic as what passes for English from those complaining. You live by the gun you die by the gun. Another gang member gone hopefully before he could take a "real" innocent persons life.
Posted by: Joe | July 17, 2009 at 04:25 PM
16 or 61 yrs old. If you run from the police, display any action that an officer even "believes" you have a gun (heck, even a toy gun), then you risk the chance of being shot . . . and if you're lucky, still alive. We are all good kids. Our parents and freinds only remember us of being a good kid. Of course, when someone who is killed and they are being aired on the media, we "always" hear how much of a good kid they are! Im disgusted. I dont know Avery and I'm sure he was a good kid. But at the time of the incident, for what ever reason, "he wasnt a good kid!" At least for now. Lets see what the outcome of the investigation is. God Bless us all!!!
Posted by: Anonymous | July 18, 2009 at 09:58 AM
If he had a loaded gun, then he brought his misfortune on himself.
I wouldnt want someone running through my neighborhood with a loaded weapon, and would expect the police to stop that person from causing harm.
Posted by: syscom3 | July 19, 2009 at 08:56 AM
Shoot first and ask questions later..... 99.9% of the time that's what happens when you run from law enforcement. The key is, did the young man pose a threat to the deputy? none of us was there, so we don't know what happen. Maybe he had a gun maybe he didn't, you can't always beleave what law enforcement says. But one thing we do know is that he was shot in the back, so what kind of danger did he pose to the deputy if he was running away? You have to understand the mentality of the deputies that patrol the streets of Compton..shoot first and ask questions later.
Posted by: In the trenches | July 20, 2009 at 07:06 AM
In the trenches, a 16 year old in the possesion of a loaded weapon qualifies as an imminent threat to public safety.
Wouldnt it have been a shame if this punk started firing it and killed or wounded a bystander? Good thing he was brought down before he could harm people.

jahkiyza, I count 21 spelling errors in your statement. Not only am I shaking my head at the violence going on in these communities, but also at the state of our public schools.
No wonder there is so much violence and bad karma. The schools have failed!!!!
Posted by: syscom3 | July 23, 2009 at 06:06 PM
Syscom3! "These communities" You sound like the trigger happy prejudice bastard that shot him! If you are so educated, you would know that EVERYTHING you read is not the whole truth! He did not have a loaded gun! And you can clearly see on the video that the officer that shot him wasn't in danger from a child that had his back towards him. It was a CELL PHONE! Also, please reframe from calling him a "punk!' Seems to me the cop was the PUNK! We can go back and forth all day, and while you are counting spelling errors, the case is under investigation and the truth will prevail!
Posted by: Love33 | July 30, 2009 at 03:36 PM
"loaded handgun was recovered from the scene of the shooting."
Thats all we need to know.
He was up to no good, and its a good thing he was stopped before he harmed someone.
Posted by: syscom3 | July 30, 2009 at 07:46 PM
loaded handgun was recovered from the scene of the shooting."
There was no gun Sys! In case you didn't know, when cops make DEADLY mistakes in these communities, the media will quote what the department says to cover up their mistake. The world nor all cops are perfect, neither are you. I found a spelling error! I was VERY close to him, knew him since he was 6 months old. He would NEVER hurt anyone! Ok, so since you are stuck on believing there was a gun.....what just shot him down and investigate later?! That is BULL! He had rights like any other young man. If he did have a gun(which he didn't), he was never even given a chance to go to jail nor rehabilitate from what he was accused of. When the investigation is over, you will READ that the cop was wrong and another YOUNG life was taken for NO reason at ALL!
Posted by: Love33 | July 31, 2009 at 07:43 AM
love33, I just did quick look at the interactive map this blog has. Since early 2007, within a 5 mile radius of Compton, there have been a whopping 366 homicides. Now extrapolate the homicides committed over 20 or 30 years. Thats a lot of dead people in this city. And this blog doesn't even tally the shootings where someone was wounded or assaulted with a deadly weapon. And that tally would be in the 10's of thousands.
I think law enforcement knew through decades of experience of working this "jungle" on what was happening with this guy and reacted appropriately.
"he was never even given a chance to go to jail nor rehabilitate from what he was accused of." .... So you're saying hes guilty of something?
"He would NEVER hurt anyone! ". Regular readers of this blog hear the same thing over and over and over. Even when its discovered that the deceased carries a lot of baggage and is really not a nice person ... its always "He would never hurt anyone! "
You have misplaced anger. Don't blame the police. Blame it on a dysfunction city and the people who live in it.
Posted by: syscom3 | August 01, 2009 at 03:13 PM
Sys! Blah Blah your stats or research don't mean anything to this scenario! Why don't you tally the number of unnecessary shootings done by police officers in this community! A light bulb may light in your narrow minded head! So the people of this city are dysfunctional and never the cops that patrol such an environment?! The officer that shot him had "misplaced anger" and DID NOT use the correct procedures as trained! You may want to research as to why the SHERIFFS were placed in the city of Compton! Also research why they are LEAVING! Some Cops are good and some are BAD! THINK!
I said this, "If he did have a gun(which he didn't), he was never even given a chance to go to jail nor rehabilitate from what he was accused of. Syscom interpretation was, "he was never even given a chance to go to jail nor rehabilitate from what he was accused of." .... So you're saying hes guilty of something? Yes, I am saying that he was guilty of being a young black male of this community!
I am not going to go back and forth with someone who apparently who has misplaced anger themselves with people of this community or as "these communities" as you previously stated!
"When the REAL truth prevails......you will owe me and the family an apology!
Posted by: Love33 | August 03, 2009 at 08:34 AM
you want to know why their is not outrage because this "kid" was up to no good. I grew up in the ghetto too. Stopped all the time by cops, never not once did I run, had no reason to. So this kid's actions got him shot. What do you want us all to do stop and wipe away the tears? Really? Why did he run? Why didn't his parents ever tell him not to run? You are right there are a lot of questions, and some of the answers you won't like and you will fall back on to society being wrong. This young man made a choice that day along with his friends to run. He made the choice and paid the price. If he would have stayed what would he had to have dealt with? I know it would have never been death.
Posted by: jet | August 03, 2009 at 09:45 AM
Love33, you have misplaced anger.
The homicide report interactive map shows that in the past 365 days, there were 147 homicides, in which there were an additional four police shootings, all of which were found to be lawful.
I think you should be more concerned about the bloodshed in your community being committed by young black and latino men, not anything being done (legally) by the police.
Posted by: syscom3 | August 04, 2009 at 05:09 PM
Sys3! You apparently have misplaced anger yourself for black and latino males. I am hurt, not angry!
I believe that you should be more concerned with the facts instead of ASSUMING that I live in that community! I don't!
I live on the HILL with you and attended schools with you and or your children! Take care!
The Truth will Prevail!
Posted by: Love33 | August 14, 2009 at 11:09 AM
Love33, If you looked at the interactive map I think you would see that perhaps a lot of black and latino males have misplaced anger issues. The sad part is that it appears to be self-hatred. Now, it's not to say that they are that way because of race, but more likely because of lack of proper parental guidance and/or role models, lower education, poverty and just growing up in an area where they don't feel safe. Many of those poor kids see things before age 15 that most people never see their whole life. I think it would help a lot if these young girls would grow up, get a good education, get financial stability and stop breeding with thugs, gang members and drug dealers. They should find a real man that is going to provide for, protect, LOVE and care for his family.
Posted by: Tony | August 14, 2009 at 05:57 PM
That was sweet, but not the case for this child!
Does the interative map apply to the officer....he fits your description!?
The truth will prevail!
Posted by: Love33 | August 18, 2009 at 12:03 PM
Love33, The interactive map showed that this shooting was officer involved. Its up to the DA to determine if it was justified.
Now tell me, you dont live in the neighborhood it happened in, yet you seem to suggest you have inside information about it. Have you spoken to the DA's office about this evidence? Or are you just believing rumor and second hand information?
I would also like to hear about your feelings about the homicide map (when it was up and running). Do you suggest that it was inaccurate in listing the homicides and locations they were in? Do you not believe that the vast majority of homicides are black and latino related, concentrated in a few area's?

Vicky,
As a mother of a murdered child my empathy goes out to you. I too have had to deal with the cross of a murdered family memember. No not all murdered persons are good and not all murdered persons are bad. Some murdered persons though have control over the situation that finds them facing death. Just like this young man. He had a choice he made that choice. Now we can sit here and go back and forth over if this young man was understanding of the fact that he was putting himself in danger. If he could not tell that running from the cops for no good reason was a danger then he should not have been out on the streets! His parents had an obligation to make sure that he was not out on the streets if he was too immature to handle that kind of responsibility. We will never know why he ran...he might not even be able to express why he ran if he was still here.
