On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

Signal Hill: Jahmonte Domoni Derrett, 20

June 30, 2009 |  5:46 pm

Jahmonte Domoni Derrett, a 20-year-old black man, was shot several times and died at a hospital June 19. He was shot in the 2400 block of California Avenue in Signal Hill, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Craig Harvey, chief coroner investigator and chief of operations for the coroner's office, said that Derrett was walking with someone when they were approached by three people who began shooting at them.

Derrett was shot about 2:20 p.m. and died at 4:30 p.m. the same day, Harvey said.

RIP BROTHER JAHMONTE,MAY THE CREATOR OF ALL LET YOU INTO THE KINGDOM.EVERYTIME I HAD THE ENCOUNTER WITH THE BROTHER ,IT WAS ALWAYS COOL.PEACE AND BLESSINGS TO HIS FAMILY,FRIENDS,AND LOVE ONES.HE WILL MISSED.

ANOTHER ONE BITES THE DUST,MY QUESTION IS DOES ANYONE CARE? I GUESS NOT?ANOTHER YOUNG MAN LOST HIS LIFE!OK NEXT!

RIP brother Jahmonte may the Creator open the gates for you to enter paridise.I am deepely hurt by this act of violence.Every time I saw the brother he was always in a positive state of mind even when things were not going his way.To his familly members his life will not be forgotten.PEACE.

Can someone with any information about this young man please let me know did he use to leave in the crenshaw area because the name sounds very familiar.

I was absolutely shocked when I heard the news today. I was Jahmonte's chiropractor for injuries he sustained in a car accident this year. I received the unfortunate news 10 minutes ago through the attorney that was handling his case. I WANT TO SAY RIGHT OUT OF THE GATE THAT THIS KID WAS NOT THE TYPICAL "KNUCLE HEAD" THAT OFTEN SUFFER THIS FATE. HE WAS WORKING AT THE V.A AND HAD A HEAD ON HIS SHOULDERS THAT SUGGESTED THAT HE WAS HEADED FOR SUCCESS. HE WAS DOING HIS PART TO STEER HIS FRIENDS IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION AND HAD NOTHING BUT RESPECT FOR HIM AND HIS POSITIVE OUTLOOK ON LIFE. FOR ALL WHO READ OF THIS TRADGEDY, REMEMBER THAT JAHMONTE WAS ONE OF THE GOOD ONES. NOT GANG AFFILIATED, AND TRIED TO KEEP HIS LOVED ONES FROM THAT PATH. THIS IS A TRUE TRADGEDY AND I AM HURT BY THIS. R.I.P. JAHMONTE!

DR. LEE

Jahmonte will never be forgotten, his memory will be alive in the hearts and minds of all of us that love him.He always had a smile for me and never disrespected me. I will miss his smile, but in my mind, he's not dead, he's just asleep...waiting for the time when Jehovah God will call his name. Rest in Peace nephew.
Love,
Auntie Sheila

I went to school with him. He was definitely a friendly person. He always had a smile on during football practice and honestly thats what sticks in my head. After every play if you were to look over in the free safety position there he would stand with a huge grin across his face haha. I will always remember him and I am thankful for having the chance to meet such a cool dude. May he rest in peace. Thank you and Love life.
