Vernon: Jaime Sanchez, 31

Jaime Sanchez, a 31-year-old Latino, was shot several times and killed on Monday, May 18, in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Sanchez was shot about 9:40 a.m. at his place of work, Bohnhoff Lumber Co. His boss, and the owner of the lumber yard, Charles Alan Bohnhoff, 55, was also killed.

Saul Gastelum Moreno, 51, has been charged with the murders of both men and the attempted murder of Bohnhoff's son, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Moreno had apparently gotten into a work-related argument with Bohnhoff, which led to the shooting, according to the district attorney's office.

Prosecutors allege that Moreno pointed a gun at Bohnhoff's son, who was not named, but the trigger jammed. Vernon police arrived at the scene and saw Moreno driving away. Police chased him until he crashed in Huntington Park, then he was arrested and a gun was recovered, the Whittier Daily News reported.

According to the district attorney's office Moreno is eligible for the death penalty, the decision whether to seek it has not been made.

Inglewood: Michael Montes, 18

Michael Montes, an 18-year-old Latino, died Monday, May 18, after he was shot in a parking lot in the 3600 block of West Imperial Highway in Inglewood, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Coroner's officials said Montes was standing in the lot when a car pulled up and someone fired several shots at him.

No other information was immediately available.

Echo Park: Jose Soto, 49

Jose Soto, a 49-year-old Latino, was shot Tuesday, May 19, near the intersection of 1st and Toluca streets in Echo Park, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Soto was sitting in Vista Hermosa Park with a friend when the two were approached by a younger person, wearing a hooded sweatshirt. Police said the shooter was Latino and possibly male. Several rounds were fired, and Soto was hit in the torso, according to police. He died from his injuries.

No other information was immediately available.

Sylmar: Mateo Carranzaghezzi, 20

Mateo Carranzaghezzi, a 20-year-old white man, was shot several times and killed on Friday, May 22, at the intersection of Garrick Avenue and Dyer Street in Sylmar, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Carranzaghezzi was found fatally wounded in the street; neighbors heard gunfire and called police, coroner's officials said.

El Sereno: Jimmy Vallejos, 51

Jimmy Vallejos, a 51-year-old Latino, died Friday, May 22, after he was stabbed in the 4600 block of Topaz Street in El Sereno, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Vallejos was in someone's home when he got into an argument and was stabbed, coroner's officials said.

No other information was immediately available.

Willowbrook: Charles Heintz, 39

Charles Heintz, a 39-year-old black man, was shot several times on Sunday, May 24, in the 2050 block of East 130th Street in Willowbrook, according to authorities.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies found Heintz with several gunshot wounds about 5:45 a.m. when they responded to a call about shots fired. Heintz was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No other information immediately available.

South Los Angeles: Sean Pouper, 32

Sean Pouper, a 32-year-old black man, was shot twice and killed on Monday, May 25, in the 4700 block of South Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Pouper had recently left a club and was in his car in the parking lot when he was shot shortly before 3 a.m., coroner's officials said. The shooter fled.

No other information was immediately available.

Long Beach: Miguel Garcia, 28

Miguel Garcia, a 28-year-old Latino, was shot several times on Wednesday, May 20, in the 6900 block of Paramount Boulevard in Long Beach, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Police responded to a call about shots fired and found Garcia inside a home. He was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Long Beach Police Department.

Koreatown: Christopher Herrera, 18

Christopher Herrera, an 18-year-old Latino, was shot in the chest and killed on Saturday, May 23, in the 700 block of South Normandie Avenue in Koreatown, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Los Angeles Police Department officials said the killing was gang-related.

Herrera was walking with a friend, a 16-year-old girl, when a car pulled up and someone fired off several shots, according to the LAPD. Both Herrera and the girl were hit. The girl, who was not named, underwent surgery for her injuries and survived, police said.

Authorities said the only information available about the shooter and occupants of the car is that they were Latino.

Vermont Knolls: Anson Greenwood, 31

Anson Greenwood, a 31-year-old black man, was shot in the chest on Saturday, May 23, in the 1300 block of West Manchester Avenue in Vermont Knolls, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

The shooting, in which another man was wounded, occurred shortly before 5 p.m., said Sgt. Mike Flanagan of the Los Angeles Police Department. Two gunmen walked up to Greenwood and the other man and opened fire as they stood outside a doughnut shop, he said.

Both victims were taken to a hospital. Greenwood died later that day.  The other man, who was shot in the back, was listed in stable condition, Flanagan said.

Witnesses told police that the gunmen drove off. No other details were immediately available.

Authorities said they had very few leads and asked anyone with information to contact 77th Area Criminal Gang/Homicide Group, Detectives Ernesto Mendoza or Armando Bernal, at 213-485-1383.

Valley Glen: Raul Castillo, 36

Raul Castillo, a 36-year-old Latino, was shot twice in the back on Saturday, May 23, in the 6900 block of Goodland Avenue in Valley Glen, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Officers responded to a call about a possible shooting at about 10:30 p.m.and found Castillo lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Detectives said Castillo, of North Hollywood, was walking west on Bassett Street when he was approached by one or more people. The suspects fired four shots, then drove away in a dark-colored car, according to the LAPD.

The LAPD has not yet determined a motive for the shooting or determined the type of gun used.

Long Beach: David Mam, 17

David Mam, a 17-year-old Asian youth, was shot several times and killed on Saturday, May 23, in the 1000 block of Hill Street in Long Beach, according authorities.

Long Beach police responded to a call about shots fired at about 10:45 p.m. They discovered Mam dead and another man injured.

Witnesses told police that Mam was standing with a group of people when a car drove up and a passenger fired several times into the group. The wounded man, whose name was not released, is a 19-year old white man from Signal Hill, police said.

The Long Beach Press-Telegram reported that Mam was a member of an Asian gang in Long Beach and may have been killed by a rival gang member.

Long Beach: Socrates Siqueiros, 21

Socrates Siqueiros, a 21-year-old Latino, was shot and killed by Long Beach police officers on Sunday, May 24, at the intersection of 15th Street and Henderson Avenue in Long Beach, according authorities.

Police said Siqueiros had pulled a gun on two officers who were chasing him Sunday afternoon.

The incident began about 4 p.m., when officers in a special gang unit approached two men, who ran off, said Nancy Pratt of the Long Beach Police Department.

The chase ended, officers said, when Siqueiros turned toward them and brandished a gun. One or both officers opened fire, fatally wounding him, Pratt said. A gun was found at the scene. Neither officer was hurt.

Siqueiros was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The second man is at large, police said.

Police and the Los Angeles County district attorney’s office are investigating the shooting, the third officer-involved shooting in Long Beach that week.

So far this year, Long Beach police officers have shot nine people. By comparison, the Los Angeles Police Department -- with 10 times more officers -- reported nine officer-involved shootings, and the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department -- also about 10 times as large -- reported 10 such shootings.

Compton: Dannie Farber, 18

Dannie Farber, an 18-year-old black man, died after he was shot in the shoulder, chestand left thumb on Sunday, May 24, in the 1900 block of West Rosecrans Avenue in Compton, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

"Where you from?" asked the man, who was wearing a black hood pulled over a black baseball cap.

"What are you talking about?" Farber asked as he stood up.

The man shot Farber several times and ran out the same door, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Det. Eddie Brown said. Farber tried to crawl toward the door but collapsed near the counter.

Brown said that Farber was not in a gang and that police are still looking for the gunman. Farber would have graduated from high school on June 19.

Beverly Grove: Roderick Anthony Burton II, 21

Credit: AP Photo / KirklandRoderick Anthony Burton II, a 21-year-old black man, was shot in the head and killed on Monday, May 18, in the 8500 block of Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Grove, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Burton, an Atlanta-based rapper best-known by his stage name Dolla, was shot about 3:10 p.m. while standing in the valet waiting area of the Beverly Center mall.

Witnesses told authorities that the gunman fled in a Mercedes SUV.

Hours later Los Angeles police arrested Aubrey Louis Berry, 23, of Atlanta at Los Angeles International Airport. Police said he had what they believe was the gun that killed Burton tucked in his waistband when he was detained.

Berry has been charged with Burton's murder. He pleaded not guilty at an arraignment on May 22.

Authorities said the shooting may have stemmed from an altercation between Berry and Burton earlier in the month at an Atlanta strip club.

Burton was an up-and-coming rapper who had recorded several singles. He was in town to work on his first album, slated to be released this summer on Jive Records, said Dolla's publicist, Sue Vannasing.

Vernon: Charles Alan Bohnhoff, 55

Charles Alan Bohnhoff, a 55-year-old white man, was shot several times and killed on Monday, May 18, in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Bohnhoff, the owner of Bohnhoff Lumber Co., was one of two men killed in what authorities described as a workplace dispute.  Saul Gastelum Moreno, 51, a lumber yard employee, has been charged with killing Bonhoff and co-worker Jaime Sanchez, 31, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Moreno has also been charged with the attempted murder of Bohnhoff's son, according to the district attorney's office. Prosecutors allege that Moreno pointed a gun at Bohnhoff's son, who was not named, but the trigger jammed.

Vernon police arrived shortly after 9:40 a.m. and saw Moreno driving away. Police chased him until he crashed in Huntington Park; he was arrested and a gun was recovered, the Whittier Daily News reported.

According to the district attorney's office Moreno is eligible for the death penalty, although the office has not decided whether to seek it.

Homicides: May 18 to May 25

The Los Angeles County coroner has confirmed the following deaths as homicides. The Times will report more details later this week:

Michael Montes, a 18-year-old Latino, on May 18. Montes was shot in the 3600 block of West Imperial Highway in Inglewood.

Charles Bohnhoff, a 55-year-old white man, on May 18.  Bohnhoff was shot in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon.

Jaime Sanchez, a 31-year-old Latino, on May 18.  Sanchez was shot in the 3400 block of 26th Street in Vernon.

Roderick Burton, a 21-year-old black man, on May 18.  Burton was shot in the 8500 block of Beverly Boulevard in Beverly Grove.

Jose Soto, a 49-year-old Latino, on May 19. Soto was shot at the intersection of 1st Street and Toluca Street in Echo Park.

Miguel Garcia, a 28-year-old Latino, on May 20. Garcia was shot in the 6900 block or Paramount Boulevard in Long Beach.

Mateo Carranzaghezzi, a 20-year-old white man, on May 22. Carranzaghezzi was shot at the intersection or Garrick Avenue and Dyer Street in Sylmar.

Jimmy Vallejos, a 51-year-old Latino, on May 22. Vallejos was stabbed in the 4600 block of Topaz Street in El Sereno.

Christopher Herrera, a 18-year-old Latino, on May 23. Herrera was shot in the 700 block of South  Normandie Avenue in Koreatown.

Anson Greenwood, a 31-year-old black man, on May 23. Greenwood was shot in the 1300 block of West Manchester Avenue in Vermont Knolls.

Raul Castillo, a 36-year-old Latino, on May 23. Castillo was shot in the 6900 block of Goodland Avenue in Valley Glen.

David Mam, a 17-year-old Asian, on May 23. Mam was shot in the 1000 block of Hill Street in Long Beach.

Charles Heintz, a 39-year-old black man, on May 24. Heintz was shot in the 2050 block of East 130th Street in Willowbrook.

Socrates Siqueiros, a 21-year-old Latino, on May 24. Siqueiros was shot at the intersection of 15th Street and Henderson Avenue in Long Beach.

Dannie Farber, a 18-year-old black man, on May 24. Farber was shot in the 1900 block of West Rosecrans Avenue in Compton.

Sean Pouper, a 32-year-old black man, on May 25. Pouper was shot in the 4700 block of South Vermont Avenue in South Los Angeles.


Athens: Robert Rodwell, 28

Robert Rodwell, a 28-year-old black man, was shot several times on Wednesday, May 13, while pulling out of his driveway in the 1400 block of 105th Street in Athens, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Rodwell was with his wife when someone approached their car and shot him several times, according to  Los Angeles County Sheriff's officials. The shooter fired without provocation, then ran off, authorities said.

Rodwell had just celebrated his daughter's seventh birthday. He was a drum instructor at George Washington Prep High School, according to KABC-TV Channel 7.

Pomona: Roberta Romero, 24

Roberta Romero, a 24-year-old Latina from West Covina, was shot several times and killed on Monday, May 11, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Romero's body was found in the street near the intersection of Glenpark Street and Bellevue Avenue in Pomona about 5 a.m., according to the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Police had responded to a report of a shooting.

Ramiro Juan Alvarez, 24, and Rodney Coronel Perez, 28, were arrested in connection with Romero's death, officials said.

Alvarez has been charged with murder and is scheduled to be arraigned on June 3. Perez has also been charged with murder, as well as evading an officer and willful disregard, according to the Los Angeles County district attorney's office.

Huntington Park: Jose Ramos, 79

Jose Ramos, a 79-year-old Latino, died from a stab wound to the chest on Sunday, May 17, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Ramos was stabbed by an unknown person who entered his home in the 6000 block of Stafford Avenue in Huntington Park, according to coroner's investigators.

Downey: Ly Tran, 45

Ly Tran, a 45-year-old Asian man, was shot in the head on Friday, May 15, in the 13100 block of Lakewood Boulevard in Downey, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Tran was shot at his place of business by an unknown person who argued with him, coroner's investigators said.

Tran had recently extended the hours at Downey Drinking Water to try to increase business, family members told The Downey Patriot. He was shot about 7:45 p.m., 45 minutes after he would have previously closed up for the night.

Surveillance video at the scene captured a  brief scuffle between Tran and a male Hispanic, 30 to 40 years old, 5 feet 5 to 5 feet 7 inches tall, with a medium build and a medium complexion, according to the newspaper. Downey police said the man wore a distinctive cap with the letters “SF” on the front.

Central Alameda: Victor Moreno, 19

Victor Moreno, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot several times and killed on Thursday, May 14, in the 1700 block of East Vernon Avenue in Central Alameda, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Coroner's investigators said Moreno was standing on a street corner when someone drove by and shot him.

Panorama City: Erika Balayan, 27

Erika Balayan, a 27-year-old Latina, died after she was shot several times on Wednesday, May 13, in the 8300 block of Van Nuys Boulevard in Panorama City, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Michael Moore, a 20-year-old black man, died after he was shot several times in the head, torso and right arm on Wednesday, May 13, in the 1100 block of South Chester Avenue in Inglewood, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Coroner's investigators said said Moore was standing in front of a vehicle talking to someone when someone drove by and shot him.

LaAngelo Florist, a 21-year-old black man, died from several gunshot wounds on Saturday, May 16, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

The shooting occurred in the 2000 block of 115th Street in Watts.

Inglewood: Marcus Smith, 31

Marcus Smith, a 31-year-old black man, was shot multiple times by Inglewood police officers and killed on Sunday, May 17, in the 800 block of Osage Avenue in Inglewood, according authorities.

Police officers said Smith brandished a weapon as they tried to break up a birthday party shortly after 12:45 a.m. Authorities said they were called to the party to break up a fight.

"He had it in his hand. He drew it and pointed it in the direction of the officers," Lt. Mike McBride said. "So I would say that's threatening the officers."

One officer was shot in the right leg in the incident. Authorities said they believed he was shot by Smith but said more tests were needed to be sure.

Kalonna LaCount, who identified herself as Smith's fiancee, disputed the police account. LaCount said she and Smith were leaving the party together after police called on guests to disperse when he slipped on a stairway.

"He had his hands in the air," she said. "The more he stumbled, the more they shot."

The shooting was the latest deadly incident involving Inglewood's Police Department, which is under investigation by two outside agencies, including the U.S. Department of Justice, over its use of deadly force.

Whittier: Danny Quijada, 30

Danny Quijada, a 30-year-old Latino, was shot several times and killed on Saturday, May 16, in the 6300 block of Milton Avenue in Whittier, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Quijada was standing in front of his apartment building when a man approached him at about 5:30 p.m. and fired several shots, according to the Whittier Daily News. He died at the scene.

Whittier police told the newspaper that Quijada, who lived in the building with his pregnant wife and four  children, did not appear to have any involvement with gangs.

Authorities described the shooter as a Latino with short black hair who was wearing a baseball cap. Witnesses said that after shooting Quijada the gunman drove off in a dark gray Toyota Camry.

Hyde Park: Javier Gonzalez-Cordero, 19

Javier Gonzalez-Cordero, a 19-year-old Latino, was shot several times and killed on Saturday, May 16, in the 2900 block of Hyde Park Boulevard in Hyde Park, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Another man, Alejandro Perez-Robles, 25, was also shot to death, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Perez-Robles and Gonzalez-Cordero were standing on the sidewalk outside a restaurant where they worked as dishwashers, according to El Financiero, a Mexican newspaper. The newspaper said both men were immigrants from Coronango, a city southeast of Mexico City.

They were approached on the street by more than one person, and several rounds were fired at them, according to the LAPD statement.

Police did not release any description of suspects or provide a possible motive.

Hyde Park: Alejandro Perez-Robles, 25

Alejandro Perez-Robles, a 25-year-old Latino, died from a gunshot wound to the left torso on Saturday, May 16, in the 2900 block of Hyde Park Boulevard in Hyde Park, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Another man, Javier Gonzalez-Cordero, 19, was also shot and killed, according to a statement released by the Los Angeles Police Department.

Gonzalez-Cordero and Perez-Robles were standing on the sidewalk outside a restaurant where they worked as dishwashers, according to El Financiero, a Mexican newspaper. The newspaper said both men were immigrants from Coronango, a city southeast of Mexico City.

They were approached on the street by more than one person, and several rounds were fired, according to the LAPD statement.

Police did not release any description of suspects or provide a possible motive.

Long Beach: Courtney Adams, 24

Courtney Adams, a 24-year-old black man, was shot several times on Wednesday, May 13, in the 6800 block of Atlantic Boulevard in Long Beach, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's office.

Police discovered Adams's body in a parking lot after someone reported an assault shortly before 10 p.m.

Adams, of Compton, had been shot in the torso and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 27-year-old Compton man whose name was not released was shot in the leg. That man was taken to a hospital and authorities said he was expected to recover.

Anyone with information about this shooting is asked to call Long Beach Police Department Dets. Bryan McMahon or Pat O'Dowd at 562-570-7244.
