On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.
Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.
Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.
If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

I have lived in Chicago my entire life. I was unaware about what happens there in Los Angeles. Now what? No more!? How can we make others aware if you are gone?
Posted by: Kimmy | January 01, 2009 at 01:03 PM
This kept us informed of what was going on on our city. Why would you end something so powerful?
Posted by: Ted | January 01, 2009 at 01:03 PM
This blog is interesting and informative, unlike some of the other ones I have seen. It attracts readers from across the country. Please reinstate it and keep us informed!

I agree with what another poster said - this blog is the best thing the LA Times has. Lately, I have been telling people about it more than reading it, and I am sorry to see it is on hiatus. Seriously, this is not only the best thing on the LA Times, but probably one of the most relevant blogs in all the congeries of the modern blogosphere.
Posted by: ph | January 01, 2009 at 01:07 PM
This was really the only blog that kept me informed on what's going on in LA. I moved to Texas a year and a half ago and I found out that one of my good friends were killed. I still love LA, but Texas was the best thing for me and my kids. I need this connection to make sure all my love ones that's there are still ok

This is the only site from the LA Times that I have bookmarked. I appreciate all the hard work that went into keeping up the site. I hope to see it running again. I thought it was print that was getting cut back, not the internet. Please restart the site. Thanks.

Tell me where to get the info; I'll run the blog myself, elsewhere, far away from the impotent LA Times and its special interest godfathers.
Posted by: areles | January 01, 2009 at 01:17 PM
I can't believe the LAT would cut this blog due to budget cuts! PLEASE BRING IT BACK!
Posted by: Grace | January 01, 2009 at 01:17 PM
Why is it going away?
I really feel that this blog helped people see how dangerous the streets of LA are!
If I was a cop I would stop & check anyone that looked like a thug/gangster to me it may be mean but im sure that i will find something that he/she wastn supposed to be carrying or is someone that has warrants.
I lived in South LA East LA Watts my whole life I know who is who by looking at their appearence.
You would too if you seen and heard what I have growing up in these streets of LA.

This blog has been gone way too long.
It is a vital component of the L.A. Times, has been widely hailed and now appears to fallen into the same bankruptcy pit as the rest of the newspaper.
Bring back this blog, Sam Zell!!!
Posted by: T. Bird | January 01, 2009 at 01:17 PM
Wow I can't believe that with all these comments that they still have not brought back this blog. I haven't been on here in a while but decided to check back and see if this has resumed... wrong... I do hope that someone... anyone listens to all of the "people" I thought we were the ones that mattered... but apparently not.

i am a middle school social studies teacher and everyday i project this blog on my lcd projector and read the names and stories of murder victims each week. these stories touch the lives of so many of my students. they begin to realize the effect their behavior has on other people's lives.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE BRING BACK THIS BLOG. Unfortunately, mainstream media rarely report on the lives that are lost in the inner city. It seems like the media cares more about fashion, celebrities and animals more than they do about the minority youths who are slained in the urban areas. This blog allowed an opportunity for those who lost their lives to to be seen as a human being and not seen as just another number within a statistic. It was very informative and it kept me aware of what is happening in our communities. Please, Please, Please LATIMES, bring back this blog!

just bring it back already.
Posted by: hiatus hater | January 01, 2009 at 01:20 PM
I hope it returns. I really find this to be one of the most profound news sources. Thanks for the great reporting.
Posted by: Sarah | January 01, 2009 at 01:20 PM
Ditto Mike SF : The blog was obviously an embarrassment to LA and its political leaders. They are embarrassed they are in charge of an out of control city. They are embarrassed over the number of illegal aliens who are involved in murder. They are embarrassed over the pervasive gang problem they have (anemically) tried to handle and have failed miserably. Here's one thing they are *not* embarrassed about -- they depend on the uninformed and purposefully ignorant public to be kept in the dark about the real problems here. They are extremely afraid they will be voted out of office by an informed citizenry for doing absolutely nothing. THAT, my friends, is why this blog will NEVER RETURN!
Posted by: SERGDOGXL | January 01, 2009 at 01:20 PM
So, all of the information is public record, correct? Then anyone can start their own little LA Homicide Report. ;)
Posted by: we need a voice | January 01, 2009 at 01:20 PM
Bring it back!
Or maybe someone else can replace this blog and start a new one..??
Posted by: jay | January 01, 2009 at 01:20 PM
Wow! I don't even live in LA, I live in Sacramento, but kept up with the Homicide Report on a weekly basis. It was really an eye opener to see what people in these major urban areas have to live with. I also used this blog to show my nineteen year old daughter (who thinks that gangbanging is cool) the aftermath of all the young kids, and young adults who get caught up in this endless cycle, as well as the innocent bystanders. All these young lives wasted. I know it doesn't matter what I think, but I think you owe it to the people of your city, to keep them informed, and to help to try and protect their children.

U gotta start this section back up. The community MUST KNOW what is going on. It is not negative news...it is news that we must know. This is a great site, & U had great people doing a great job.
Bring them back, or I cancel my subscription

I think it's sad that this blog is necessary in the first place. People are killing each other for what? It's not the fault of the police for not protecting these citizens - they can only do so much. Where are the parents making sure their kids are going to school and not dropping out at a 50% rate here in LA? Where are the parents in making sure their kids have a goal in life outside of being a gang member and committing a life of crime? I enjoy the Homicide Blog because it proves that blacks are killing blacks and browns are killing browns.

Every since my brother was murdered in 2006 I stumbled upon this website. I share each person's story and pain who has lost someone. The most devestating thing to me was to loose my brother to senseless violence. I read The Homicide Report each and every day. I miss reading the report. And the one thing, I don't live in LA or California for that matter. I live on the other side of the map. I actually live in Washington, DC. I read the stories every day to see that a person that was killed was not forgotten. Caring people wrote about them. That person's family pain was shared by everyone who read the stories. Your stories tocuhed me as if I knew each victim. It started as me just reading it that day but became an obsession. Please bring it back. The one thing about your website was that you did not forget about the victim.
Posted by: Mickey | January 02, 2009 at 06:33 PM
What is with the people who are near 40 being killed? How sad.
Posted by: JMB | January 03, 2009 at 11:25 AM
Absolutely disgusting that the people in charge of this city would try to sweep this under the rug from Angelenos who wanted to know of the problems plaguing their city. I'm born and raised here in L.A. and I'm not allowed to find out what's going on in my own neighborhood?
Of course, the only way to solve a problem is to acknowledge it, correct? Shame on the L.A. Times, the Mayor, the Chief, and anyone else involved in pulling the plug on an informative blog. Shame on you and the blood of murders that can be prevented will fall on your hands.

The ONLY reason this blog stopped is because the leftist LATimes doesn't want the truth out any longer.
Let's not kid ourselves, this Hiatus is Permantus.

Please bring "THE HOMICIDE REPORT" back. The community must be informed. Does anybody else know if there are any other websites or bloggers that report on L.A. homicides, murders?
Posted by: Joe | January 08, 2009 at 09:20 PM
I've had times when I think about this blog after it discontinued and realize that without the reports of constant homicide one begins to believe that LA is a safe city, nothing is happening that should be of concern - this is the outcome of discontinuing this blog. I've now wondered, how many people died in the month of December or who died this past weekend. LA times should bring back this blog and discontinue the Auto Blog.

FIGURES L.A. TIMES CANT HANDLE THE PRESSURE FROM L.A.P.D.
Posted by: Bob B | January 11, 2009 at 12:23 PM
Bring it back because it shows what a complete crime ridden hell hole LA has become. Do something Mayor before it is too late. What a dump.
Posted by: Steve | January 12, 2009 at 05:28 PM
No doubt the public relations wing for Mayor VivaLaRaza believes in flushing evidence of his failures down the memory hole.
This blog is IMPORTANT. More important than just about anything else in your lousy rag except for the Fry's ads.

I really wish you would bring this back. This is actually news isn't it? For gosh sakes, someone may read this and be able to help solve something.
Please bring this back.
Thanks
Doug

Oh I see why it's be discontinued. I looked over at the LAT Blogs............. this was much more informative and probably took away from all the "Gossip, Entertainment, food and money blogs........
The LAT is doing a great dis-service to the public by getting rid of the Homicide Report.
Posted by: Doug Gentry | January 14, 2009 at 02:00 PM
Please bring this blog back. This is very important to me & a whole lot of my friends. Through this blog I discovered 2 people who died senselessly that I had known, but not seen for a year of so. This is a very good site that brings information to the community.
