Mid-City: 16-year-old boy is fatally shot on sidewalk

October 23, 2008 |  1:20 pm

Jayquan Johnson, a 16-year-old black youth, was fatally shot in the 5100 block of Pickford Street at 9:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 20. The teenager, a 10th-grader at Hamilton High School, was hit once and pronounced dead at a hospital.

LAPD investigators said Johnson was standing on the sidewalk with friends when a vehicle with several suspects inside pulled up and fired multiple shots. Those in the group ran for cover, but one of the bullets struck Johnson.  The suspects fled in the car, striking  parked vehicles as they sped away.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Wilshire homicide detectives at (213) 473-0446 or call (877) LAWFULL (529-3855).

This is so unfortunate another teenager killed before he has began to live his life. The violence in our communities has now turned into a plaque claiming lives of young people for no apparent reason, gang igniation, or being in the wrong place at the wrong time. We need to patrol and become reporters of our nieghborhoods since the police lack presence and nothing seems to be done about these homicides that are effecting our families, children and our elders. To the family of this young ,man be strong and may the Lord comfort you in your hour of need. To whomever committed this crime you maybe hiding but you will soon be apprehended and prosecuted for this murder and once behind those prison walls you may run acroos more than you can deal with wishing you were dead because a coward you are.

i knew this person and so many people including myself are truly affected by this. it hurts to know this has happened to such a nice person. he was one of the most funnniest nicest and caring people that i had ever met and yet... hes gone with in the blik of an eye. r.i.p jayquan you will truly be missed. to the family hold in there know that hes in gods hands now.. and we shouldnt want it any other way... to the people that did it.. may god bless you

I remember Jayquan from Coliseum ES and I am so sorry and angered by another young man being killed before he had a chance to really live. My 19 year old nephew was shot and killed in February of this year. My thoughts and prayers are with his family especially his mother, sisters, brother and nephew. God Bless and comfort you now and forever.

i agree with this comment left on here as a mom of a murdered child i hope the person who gunned down this innocent child is caught and sent to prison, the cowards who killed my 18yr old son were convicted this year and in the courtroom after being caught running from the police with murder weapon in hand he still sat in court and turned to me and said lady god rest your son's soul i did not do it well he must of had a twin it amazes me that these guys can kill for their gang and if they had of gotten away with it they would of went back to their hood as they call it and bragged about it and felt like they did something so big and bad yet when caught you are little coward brag to the judge and jurors that you did this for your hood i hope and pray that this family get justice because here is another young man who wont ever get to enjoy life and make a difference in this world my deepest prayers go out to this young mans family may god bring you some kind of peace as i know all to well what it feels like to lose your child who you birthed in this world to such a cruel act. peace and harmony to you, cheryl

Heres a niffty thing to do since the LA times doesnt update the homicide report. and they are layin off everybody---type in the adresses where these people get killed at on GOOGLE MAPS and click the map to ground level and you can see guys hangin in the hood...could one of these guys be Jayquan? type in this adress and go and see for your self where these boys die in there hood.

It amazes me that all my people in Los Angeles, still let cars ride up on them, and let strange people approach them on foot!
Don't get me wrong I'm not baming this young man, but the elders need to school these cat so they aren't such easy targets.

Not that it would have helped a teen victim, but pity we don't learn from the incontrovertible statistics from Florida that more guns = less violent crime. When gangs don't fear repercussion, they can murder without fear.

In Florida, with 315,000 concealed carry permits, only 5 violent crimes have been committed by legal gun owners.

The best way to combat crime is to make the option less attractive.

This is sad that this happen to him, but when you live that life you know the consequences behind it. My cousin knew him from middle school and informed me of his gang affilation with the school yards so he should have been more careful. Instead of trying to hang out he should have been in the house getting ready for school. May he rest in peace and hopefully another teenager will learn from this, that this is not the life to live.

Oh yeah I'm so sure this individual if not gunned down would have done something positive, sure thing buddy. Live by the gun and die by the gun. Do ya ever see legal gun owners die from gang related crap like this, no!

me and my family lived at 5173 Pickford from 1969 to 1981. In 1978 or 79 one of the neighborhood boys was killed at LA high school. He was a Marvn Ave. Gangster street name "MAD ROD" He was killed by the School Yard Crips in the locker room. That was the first time I heard of a youth being killed. I was about 10 at the time. I remember seeing the obituary. Reportedly they broke his back and ripped the braces from his mouth. Even today I still think about that. I think about how his parents must feel and how after that my own childhood was never the same.

omg omg omg soo this is like my brother i have been knowing him for going on 5 years now... we attended the same highschool and he lived 3 blocks away from me

it angers me too see stuff like this because if you knew jayquan he might of gangbanged but he wasnt like the rest he was readyy to change he was tired of the hard life and trouble and too hear him go before he had the chance just seems so wrong!!

whoever did this should feel horrible jayquan was a loving smart and careing person he gone now but never forgotten

brother save a spot for me up there chuz when we meet its gone b like old times
i love and miss you dearly jayquan dion jhonson
and may you rest in peace and know we holding it down for you down here...

missing you bro

Omfg this is my brother i miss you so much jayjay i love u bro bro

remember you will be missed and loved forever bro bro i love you and you will always be in my heart

- Big Y ws School Yard Crip In Peace

Big Y, are you suggesting you are crip? If so, stop with the crocodile tears. The only thing you stand for is violence, murder, and insanity.

If the deceased hadnt been lured into the gangster lifestyle, he would be alive today.
