Omar Sanchez, 18, a young Latino, was shot in a drive-by shooting at Avenue 60 and Hayes Avenue in Highland Park about 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16.

Spokeswoman Officer Julianne Sohn of LAPD’s media relations office said Sanchez and another Latino man were standing on the sidewalk Saturday afternoon, Aug. 16, when a black 4-door sedan pulled up next to them. Someone from inside the vehicle asked Sanchez and the other man what gang they belonged to. Then Sanchez and the man were both shot. Sanchez was taken to a local hospital, where he died the next day. The second man was also taken to a nearby hospital, and recovered from his gunshot wound.
