Edward Satterstrom, 16, a Latino youth, was shot several times in the chest near Roscoe and Laurel Canyon boulevards in North Hollywood about 9:15 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 2. He was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On Monday, in the community room of the LAPD's North Hollywood Division, Los Angeles City Councilman Tony Cardenas, pictured above, and police officials announced the identification of Satterstrom's alleged shooter.

David Aranda Hernandez, 18, pictured right, allegedly approach Satterstrom as he was walking with a female friend, said police Lt. Alan Hamilton at the conference. Jesus_aranda_hernandez_18  Hamilton said some words were exchanged, then Satterstrom was shot in the chest. But he managed to run to a nearby Taco Bell restaurant, where he collapsed, Hamilton said. Witnesses told police that a young Latino man, now identified as Hernandez, was seen running from the area. Hamilton said Hernandez, a resident of North Hollywood, may now have short hair and is still in the San Fernando Valley area. He said Hernandez is associated with a gang from Pacoima and may have been in the area looking for a gang confrontation. Hamilton added that Satterstrom was not a gang member.

"He is a good kid," Cardenas said. "He was a father figure for his six siblings."

Satterstrom lived with his grandmother in Sun Valley. He was a varsity football player at John Francis Polytechnic High School and wanted to go to USC to play football, his girlfriend told the Daily News. This is the second shooting involving a football player from Polytechnic High School.  On May 31, Jesus Florian, 17, was fatally shot at a party.  Hamilton said the investigation into that shooting is still ongoing.  "In less than three months two students from Poly High School in the San Fernando Valley have been killed, Cardenas said. "This has got to stop."

Anyone with information about the shooting can call North Hollywood homicide detectives at (818) 623-4075

Update: A fund-raising car wash to help cover funeral expenses for 16-year-old Edward Satterstron will be held Saturday, Aug. 9, at the Brewline Coffee Shop, located at 1240 Truman St. in San Fernando. The wash will be held between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

The Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner's office initially reported Edward's last name as Satterstron, but North Hollywood homicide detectives said the correct spelling of his name is Satterstrom. A school official also confirmed the spelling of Edward's last name.

David is a complete idiot for killing one of our friends if he was tough enough why didn't he fight him atleast with his fist wat a coward hope he gets caught soon!!!!!!!!!!!!!
R.I. P. Eddie we really miss u A LOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is sad. I am organizing a prayer day on Saturday Aug 9, 2008. All day. Where ever you are, please stop and say a prayer for gang violence to end. We have the resources and we have the desire, now all we need is POWER.

Just pack them up and ship them to Iraq. They would feel at home there. We don't want gang members anymore. Parents you have a choice. A choice wether or not to have children and when you do have children where you live and whom your child hangs out with. Yes it is your reponsibility. No one made these choices but you.

Tarn Helm, do you know who Nelson Mandela is? Do you know his history? Perhaps you should google his name.

This won't end until pop culture stops celebrating the virtues of thug life.

I live in Sun Valley and i am at a loss of words to explain howi feel about whathas happened in my neighborhood recently.I have a younger brother that attented school with the Edward aswell with Jesus Florian(killed 2 months ago) who my brother was close to. We haven't even finished mourning for one innocent boy who's life was cut short due to gang violence and now have to see this happen again. My prayers are with the families of these two boys who did not deserve to go this soon or this way. I ask that anyone who has any information that would help to capture those reasponsible for this, please the north hollywood station. Just place yourself in the families shoes for a second, how would it feel to know someone has valuable information to your loved one's murder but they won't come forward because you just rather not be involved. Involving yourself may not bring that person back but it would give the family peace of mind that justice was served.

This will not stop until the following occur:

1) All law-abiding citizen applicants are issued permits to carry concealed loaded weapons.

2) All gang members are locked up for a minimum of 10 years per felony, with no possible plea "deals" or sentence reductions.

3) All gang members convicted of any murder are sentenced to death and swiftly executed.

4) All juvenile gang members are permanently incarcerated in County Probation Camps until they are 18 years old for their first offense, at which point in their lives they are sentenced to state prison until they die of old age or something else.

5) The "glory" of the gang mentality is no longer valorized by school teachers preaching the "virtue" of "Che" Guevara, "Malcolm X," "Pancho" Villa, Nelson Mandela, "Minister" Louis Farrakhan or any other criminal.

'THIS HAS GOT TO STOP'..... Broken records and words wll not solve our frontline problems of gang violence. The ball was passed around by the city council, the controller and now the Mayor is stating that it is time to celebrate all time low crime rates in the city. This is extremely discouraging for those of us who understand and live the sad reality of vilence in our communities. It does not take a committee or a scientific spreadsheet for people to have the nerve to play the politics and lie to the community by saying that chief Bratton is a super hero. The facts will prove that in order to connect with these criminal minded individuals you must hire and expand the amount of experienced educators to work in the frontlines of the communities in need. We mourn the loss of Law Enforcement officals in gang infested communities, although it is never easy to digest the loss of our youth and the bright futures they strived for in life.

David Aranda Hernandez, may you soon suffer the same fate as the unsuspecting victim to your thoughtless act.

It is sad it seems a young person can go out in some of these neighborhoods and not be accosted by some idiot gangmember. A complete coward on the run for shooting down an innocent kid. I hope the police catch the little coward as soom as possible.

i really feel for the family, friends and school.this is becoming a way too often event.a young man with a seemingly bright future cut down by another child who chose a different path.two lives have changed many lives forever.those left behind will grieve for the dead, and the family of the shooter has to forever deal with whatever happens to him.there is no winner, only lost.please love your family hard and strong, take care of one another and GOD BLESS U ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why am I not surprised
