Steven Benavides, 19, a young Latino, was shot in a drive-by shooting in the 5300 block of Huntington Drive, near Poplar Street, in El Sereno about 1 p.m. Thursday July, 10.

Benavides was standing or walking when a car pulled up next to him, police said. A man with a covered face, stepped out of the car, approached Benavides and asked him ‘Where are you from?’ Then shot Benavides in the upper torso, police said. Benavides was taken by ambulance to County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. Detectives from LAPD’s Hollenbeck Division said Benavides was a member of a gang that is currently involved in a feud with another gang.

Benavides was several hours from turning 20. His birthday was July 11, 1988.
