Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

On Wednesday morning, outside the Los Angeles Police Department's Hollywood Division, homicide detectives and City Councilman Eric Garcetti announced a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrests of Diego Cruz's killers. Above, Cruz's father, Martimiano Cruz, 38, speaks with reporters about his son.

According to authorities, 14-year-old Diego Cruz was on his way to a Sears store on Santa Monica Boulevard about 8 p.m.  on Christmas Eve when he was shot. Cruz collapsed in front of the store.

"It's been difficult,"  his father said. "Sometimes I don't sleep much because I'm up thinking: How is it that this happened to my son?"

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call Hollywood detectives at (213) 972-2968.

Such a tragedy. I'm glad the authorities are still actively involved and appear to be giving it attention. Cudos to Garcetti for his efforts in keeping the investigation alive.

God help us. who will be number 400 on the homicide list in L.A. county? is it me u or you brother sister? mom dad? we should have more dead way b4 sunday.

It is sad and disgusting that this young man was murdered on Christmas Eve. I can say that I'm not really surprised. Unfortuanately, this blog is full of young latin men that were murdered. I guess there is really no way to total end this type of unprovoked senseless murders from happening. There are alot of deranged heartless people in the city and world.
