Steve Farrell, 20

Steven Scott Farrell, 20, a white man, died from a gunshot wound at County-USC Medical Center at 9:18 p.m. Monday, June 9, the L.A. County coroner's office reported.

Farrell was shot near Perlita and Veselich avenues in Atwater Village about 7:45 p.m. Saturday, June 7. According to Det. Jose Carillo of the LAPD's Northeast Division, Farrell was a documented gang member and was driving in rival gang territory with a friend. Carillo said rival gang members chased after Farrell, and when they caught up to his car they began shooting. Carillo said Farrell was struck in the head and crashed into a parked car.

Farrell was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead that Saturday. However, doctors were able to revive him, Carillo said. As a result, Farrell was incorrectly listed as one of several homicides that occurred in areas under LAPD's jurisdiction for the weekend of June 6-8. Farrell would have been the 11th homicide within the jurisdiction that weekend. Farrell remained in the hospital until Monday, when he was pronounced dead.

Update: An earlier version of this post left several readers confused about whether or not Farrell had died. Farrell was pronounced dead Monday, two days after he was shot.

Happy Birthday Steven. Today is your 24th birthday (like many other "facts" from the police report, they had your age wrong) Your family misses you more than words can ever say. They all got together to celebrate your life and all the happy times you had together. Your parents and brother are still heartbroken, but are trying to keep it together for your son. He is doing great, and getting ready to celebrate his 3rd birthday. He asks about you all the time and we all promise to never let him forget you. We hope that you have found peace and that we will all be together again someday. We love you so, so much Steven, and always will.

Steven was a beautiful person both inside and out. He was handsome and charming with a smile that would light up a room. He was kind and generous beyond his means. Steven loved his family deeply and I know he would never have wanted to put them through this. He loved being with with his mom, dad and brother and they all enjoyed many years of happy times together. His happiest days however were those he spent with his son. Steven worked hard to help support his "baby boy." He was a great dad. It's just so sad that their time together was cut so short. Steven was a wonderful grandson, nephew and friend and he will truly be missed by many people. It is very unfortunate that his poor choice in "friends" has caused so much sorrow.

the curiosity about a "white person" being a documented gang member stuns you? why ... because privilege3d whites don't gangbang? no, they do, but it is not the norm to report it because that would alien the prejudiced who believe that all or most blacks and latinos young men are thugs!

"The Rascals" . One more correction. There isnt several Armenian gangs. There is only 1 in L.A county--"Armenian Power" AP13 . The gang has deep ties in Glendale and Parts of Hollywood. AP pretty much works like a Mexican Gang-- They even use Cholo slangs..
such as "Ese", "Holmes", "Varrio" and so on. They also dress like Cholos with Dickies, Ben Davis, and Lowrider shirts. They are just as violent as all the Hispanic gangs.
They have been around more than 20 years. They are Sureños and have members in the Mexican Mafia. Word is when the gang started in the late 80's that 3 guys started it. 2 Armenians and 1 Mexican. Know the facts...

I'm sorry to say that you need to wake up and see that their are many kinds of gang members, Latinos, Blacks, Whites, Asians, Armenians, Persians ect. Just because you might think oh man he's a white guy with money and so forth you never know who they grew up with. His parents might have been a bad influence or might have lived in a bad neighborhood, but that is just rediculous that you would think that. And also, there are gang members everywhere!!! Not just in LA, nice neighborhoods are worse!!! I don't know this guy but may he rest in piece, the thing is, is that he was driving around in a rival gang neighborhood what was he thinking? Sorry to hear about this. But I must admit I'm curious that a white man was a documented gang member. I know that LA has Armenian gangs in the East Hollywood area but I never heard of a gang in Atwater Village. What gang was he supposed to be in?
