Marco Ernesto Avila, a 33-year-old Latino man, was shot and killed at the intersection of Watson Avenue and L Street in Wilmington about 8:55 p.m. Thursday, March 13. According to police, Gang Enforcement officers from LAPD’s South Bureau saw Avila allegedly committing a traffic violation. Officers pulled him over, then Avila dropped his bicycle and began fighting with officers. Police claim that Avila fired several rounds from a weapon he had concealed in his pocket. Officers Enrique Lopez and James Stover, fired back. Avila was hit several times. He was transported to St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, where he was pronounced dead at 9:21 p.m. Police said a blue steel .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol was recovered at the scene.
