On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Comments prior to Jan. 26 will, at least for now, remain archived here, with links provided in the new database.

If you have any questions please feel free to e-mail homicidereport@latimes.com, and we will do our best to respond.

Marcos Salas, 36

February 21, 2008 |  6:49 pm

Marcos_salas37 Marcos Salas, 36, a Latino man, was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting near Aragon and Roseview avenues in Cypress Park at about noon Thursday, Feb. 21. Salas was holding the hand of his 2-year-old granddaughter when he was shot mulitple times by persons in a passing car, police said. The girl was not hit nor did she suffer any major injuries, authorities said.

Police gave this account of what followed: Officers from the Northeast Division pulled over a white Nissan sedan near the intersection of Drew Street and Estara avenues. Three men got out and began shooting; one of those men was Daniel Leon, 22, who was armed with an AK-47 rifle. The officers fired back, killing Leon and injuring another man; he was taken to a local hospital and was being held for allegedly killing Salas. A third suspect fled on foot, but was later found underneath a vehicle. He was arrested on suspicion of murder, authorities said.  The fourth man fled in the white Nissan and is still at large. All three men were members of the Avenues gang, police said.

Happy Birthday G. You are someone really special-- unique. God bless this day when he gave you life. All the memeories you gave us, we will never forget-- forever you will always be with us, in hearts, in our thoughts, in our souls, because you live in us, as we live in you. Take care of us all from up there-- give us your peace-- until we meet again. We love you G.

Well CP resident, I've been trying to respond to your nonsense, but I cant get through for some reason, however here goes another try. Anyhow my Family has always been very hard workers. We come from FARMER working parents. My Brother Marcos was always employed he just didnt have a job at the time. I know the history of my niegborhood-- dont act like the expert because your odviously close minded. I dont understand how you blab about how citizens in CP, about oh, hard working families when you dont konw

PART 2. You dont know my Family at all, and for you to talk about my brother and hard working familes, its pretty ignorant dont you think? LETS BE CLEAR HERE NOW. What would you know about refoming lives? I work at a place where kids and men reform thier life everyday, and yes they CAN say there innocent regular citizens. People can change. I know know about reforming, because of my experience through life, so dont even comment on issues that you dont have FACTS about-- you live on the sidelines.

PART 3. My Brother left the gang life in 1995. He had just got out of prison for a non-gangrelated situation. Get your facts right man. My Brother was a loving Father. Go look at the wall next to the park on the RTD, or actually the Metro station wall-- my Brother did that mirrow.

Last time when we spoke in February I felt your pain. I happened to be at 'La Especial' on Pepper and Cypress when I heard the shots. Never did I imagine it would be Marcos. I am so sorry for your pain homey. I had the opportunity to meet Smiley because of you. He was a great man. Very respectful, with a good heart. I also remember your Jefito Jalisco. They are both watching over you guys. Don't forget that homey. I still live here in CP. It is where I grew up at and I ain't going anywheres. Part of that is because i never got into the neighnorhood. I hope you and Arturo are doing good. I still remember that day when you left with your girl. Jesse I have seen you around a couple of times, don't know if you remember me. But you too keep your head up homey. Smiley was a definition of a "Cool as Vato". Always smiling. Cypress Park will always remember Smiley. He is a symbol of this community either the people like it or not. May god bless you all. The Salas family.

YOU KNOW WHAT MARCOS HAD BEEN OUT OF JAIL FOR AWHILE AND HE WAS ONE HECK OF A GOOD MAN HE WAS A FATHER TO ME MORE THAN MORE OWN FATHER..
