Davion Childs, 17, a black youth, was shot in the 15700 block of South Tarrant Ave. in Gardena at 6:04 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 3. This was a drive-by shooting in an unincorporated area patrolled by the Compton sheriff’s station. Childs, a resident of Compton, was visiting a friend when someone in a dark-colored vehicle drove up and shot him. Deputies responded to a shots-fired call and discovered Childs bleeding on the porch of a house. Childs was taken to UCLA-Harbor hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced dead. His time of death was recorded at 6:53 p.m. The shooting was gang-related, said Det. Charles Morales of the sheriff’s homicide bureau. Morales said another black man was wounded by gunfire and was also taken to the same hospital, where he recovered.
