Juan Mazariegos, a 20-year-old Latino young man, was shot in the back at 5746 Aldama St. in Highland Park at about 8:15 p.m. Monday, Nov. 19. He was taken to Pasadena's Huntington Memorial Hospital, where he died. He was standing with friends when young men in a car drove up and started shooting. Mazariegos was studying to become an electrician, police said.
I'm sad to hear of this young man's death. My sympathy to the family and friends of this one. I drive up and down Aldama frequently and have always noted too much loitering at that address by gang types. It is probably the one stretch of Aldama to avoid to say it quite bluntly. LAPD did a nice job of curtailing loitering there in the last year. But still, they can't be there 24/7. It was only a matter of time that yet another shooting would occur in yet another apartment complex in LA County. It sounds like this youngman was in the process of creating a legitimate life for himself. May he rest in peace.
