Jose Luis Estrada, 40
Jose Luis Estrada, 40, a Latino man, was killed at 4202 Downing Ave. in Baldwin Park on Wednesday, Nov. 14, when he ran after the suspects who had just killed his 14-year-old son Pedro.
Police said two Latino men or youths came up to Pedro at about 8:30 p.m. at the family home in the 4100 block and shot him, then ran. Jose Luis Estrada ran outside when he heard the shots. He found Pedro dying on the ground, saw the fleeing suspects and ran after them for about a block. They turned and attacked him as well, shooting the grief-stricken father, and then making their escape. Father and son died within an hour of each other.

BALDWIN PARK - Three known gang members were in custody Thursday night in connection with the fatal shootings of a Baldwin Park High School student and his father last month, officials said.
A fourth suspect - Omar Mendez - was still at large in the slaying of Pedro "Pepe" Estrada, 40, and his son, Luis Estrada, 14.
All of the suspects - who have been charged with murder with a special gang allegation - are 17 and from Baldwin Park, said Michael Rodriguez, a sergeant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Truly sad. This is horrible, a mother just lost her 14 year old son as well as her husband. My condolences to her and those Jose Estrada left behind.

Such an incredible story, I'm amazed no one has commented on it. Death comes to the door, kills son, father chases death down the street, death turns and scoops him up, too. What a Los Angeles story. I wonder who was left behind and how they are coping. I wonder where they're from. If it's from some terribly destitute place, I wonder if they wish they'd never left for the promise of Los Angeles. So much promise and so much danger.
No comments, though. Don't you wonder about those dead on whom no one comments? Maybe they're just really private people. But I doubt it. I am guessing they are among the transient, anonymous poor in our city, the ones who are emptying out the restaurant trash in the back alleys at midnight. They might make a few friends among those they meet on the job, or maybe they gravitate toward family who came to town first. But by and large they are nobodies nobody knows. They don't read the LA Times and they don't browse the internet, nor do their friends. And if they did have a circle of friends that just doesn't follow mainstream media, I'd ask whether that circle is maintstream anything. More likely an island of people who lean on each other to survive but otherwise are not really noticed by anyone else, except maybe when somebody finishes his steak and needs his plate cleared.
Well, papa Jose, God bless you, man. I'm sorry you're gone. I admire your courage for running after those people who took your son from you. In hindsight now it seems like bad judgment, and so dangerous. But you reacted in that horrible moment, and I wouldn't second-guess you. I suppose I might have done the same thing, who knows. Perhaps the two of you are together now. God's speed to both of you.
