On Monday, Jan. 25, 2010, The Times launched a new version of the Homicide Report. You have arrived at the old blog.

Readers can no longer post new comments on this site, but we encourage you to join the conversation on our new site. The updated Homicide Report features an interactive map and searchable database of the more than 2,600 homicides in L.A. County since January 2007, when Times' reporter Jill Leovy first started this blog with the goal of covering each one.

Kenneth Flanders, 53

October 9, 2007 |  1:34 pm

Flanders Kenneth Flanders, 55, a black man, was beaten to death with a cast-iron frying pan while sleeping in his bed at 745 E. 47th St. in South-Central Los Angeles, according to Newton homicide supervisor Kelle Baitx. His time of death was listed as 8:17 p.m. Oct. 2. Flanders' 43-year-old roommate, Kevan Beech, a black man, was arrested at the scene. Investigators allege that on the previous day, Beech had gotten angry that Flanders would not provide him drugs. When Flanders fell asleep, Beech got the pan and beat him, then stayed there for a day. Flanders' family members showed up, found him beaten to death, and summoned police.

And this is why I don't do drugs!!!! this is pathetic!!!

the homocide detectives, just told us that kevan beech had confessed to my brother's murder. That gave us some closure, i feel like a weight was lifted. if my brother had died of a heart attach or stroke..ect. his death would be easier to accept. i dont't
understand why he had to go with so much violents. when he was the most non violent human being i knew. my brother was a kind and caring person.
if you were in need, down and out, no place to go he would be friend you .take you to his home and try to help. that'a how his killer became his room-mate.for some reason (since high school) he perferred to be called kennard. so rest in peace kennard. we all love you and miss you already. her big sis carol

I am Katherine Flanders the daughter and only child of Kenneth Flanders. The pain of losing my Daddy in a senseless and violent way is overwhelming. I cannot understand why anyone would hurt Daddy. Daddy was one of the most loving, giving, kind, and compassionate people I know. He had a special passion for people with drug addictions and work with recovery programs to help them recover. I plan to make sure the person responsible is held accountable. I want to understand why this happened. How could someone kill another person while they are asleep with a frying pan?

Wow...Have some sympathy...a person is dead here. Obviously he was someones family member, son, brother or uncle. Im sorry for the family's loss.

By the way drugs change people it's a disease...

Rest In Peace!!!

My prayers to the family. I agree this is a violent way to die; may you find peace in knowing that others are praying for your father, brother, son, friend, etc.

May your father and brother rest in peace. This is a terrible way to go but he was doing what he felt he had to do. I'm sorry that it ended this way.

I am an old frined of Kenny, I lived on 49th st. back in the days and was the only Mexican who lived in the area at the time, and new him very well.

R. I. P. Kenny, you will be missed but not forgotten.

I was a brief friend of Kennys. He was one of the few intelligent ones on our block. He always kept me laugh'n even when I was depressed!

Rest in Paradise Kenny! 45th street was never the same when you left!

Dear Katherine and Carol -

I am truly sorry for the loss of your Father and Brother. The Scriptures foretold the behavior of humankind in the last days at 2 Timothy 3:1-5: men will be ... having no natural affection ... without self-control ... fierce ... without love of goodness. This doesn't make your loss any easier but there is a great hope also in the Scriptures at John 5:28, 29: Do not marvel at this, because the hour is coming in which all those in the memorial tombs will hear his voice and come out, those who did good things to a resurrection of life. May this give you comfort.
